Hi WP!

I will be enrolling in a PhD program where i will be studying autism beginning at the end of this summer ie the fall 07 term...

and i guess what i would like to ask is: Are there any BEGINNER web design things that i can learn to do to make a simple webpage?

What i want to do is post summaries and figures and such on science papers that i read on autism (for my research) on a webpage so that i can link it to here and other places and make information from up-to-date autism science papers available and (easily understood) to our community here... i think it would be benficial to many here as well as helping me to really understand the material too.

thing is... i know absolutely nothin about web design... i need help from the very beginning.... like i dont even know where to go to get a decent started webpage or how to make them or anything :( :( :( :(

i just need something simple... it's mainly gonna be me rewriting a bunch of stuff in laymen's words... but i would like to know how to insert pics as well as hyperlinks.

even just names of good products or servers that provide space ect... would be a great help.

i have much bigger ideas for the webspace and am currently shopping for a webaddress... i just dont know how to build it ect..

Thanks in advance.

There are a lot of good programs out there that help design and manage websites. A couple of common ones are Frontpage and Dreamweaver. There is a lot of information out there for writing different codes. The World Wide Web Consortium has all of the official information. www.w3.org - W3C.

I don't know about hosting though. If you have more specific questions I will help you as much as I can. There seem to be quite a few knowlegable web designers here too!

easiest, no-frills, just-works: Blogger
https://www.blogger.com/start

new kid on the block: Google Pages
http://pages.google.com/-/about.html

both allow you to have a custom url, and they host everything :)

If you want to build your own server, and don't want to bother creating webpages and coding, install Wordpress
http://wordpress.org/
by the way, they also have a free hosting service:

You could go down the easy route of getting some webspace with database support and installing a cms system (content management).

Something like wordpress , zomplog or drupal would give you the backend of a site which you could amend with themes and let you deal with the content.

To see what I mean theres a demo zomplog site at
http://demo.opensourcecms.com/zomplog/admin/ username is admin and the password is demo

For hosting Im currently using godaddy which may or may not have been a great idea but it fitted my needs at the time and they offer anonymised domain purchases.

Drupal is http://drupal.org/ wordpress is also pretty configurable if installed on your own site.

If you want to learn from the ground up then try http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/how ... b-site.cfm

If you simply need to display information which is updated regularly a blog is the way to go.

I recommend Wordpress - www.wordpress.com

free to sign up, don't even need to design anything, just pick a theme and off you go!
