My Android tablet complains when I simply unplug a USB stick without unmounting it first - but I can't find any options to unmount it anyway! Where is the unmount feature?

You do it from the computer. When a device is plugged there will be a icon at the clock bar in Windows, near the clock (it might be hidden). "Save device removal" or something like that (my OS is Polish so I can't say how it is called in English). You open it and "stop" the device you want to unmount. Once you do so it will be save to unplug the cable. Not sure how it looks like for linux but should be similar.

Settings > Storage > Unmount USB Storage (scroll down below all the colored bars)

Thank you. :D I was surprised not to find such an option amongst the file/folder manipulation options. I copied a few files to the internal storage from a usb stick but there was no option to eject the stick afterwards... just file operations: copy, paste, delete, move.
