I have Comcast & the Performance internet which is 25Mb down & 5Mb up. We own the modem & router which are kind of old. I got an offer to upgrade my internet to the Blast for $10 more which is 105Mb down & 25Mb up. I do alot of file-sharing sometimes, my girlfriend sometimes plays playstation 3 games online & has a laptop & sometimes uses wifi on her phone. I have a desktop computer that's wired to the router but everything else is wifi. I also use the VPN Private Internet Access to be safer with file-sharing. I'm not sure if the Blast net would be worth $10 a month but I do know that I would have to upgrade the modem to use it sense it requires docsis 3 & our modem is only docsis 2. I think I might notice a speed increase by just getting an up-to-date modem & router or modem/router combination. I don't know a lot about networking so I'm hoping you guys can suggest a good modem & wireless router or a modem/wireless router combination. I'm not sure which would be better for my/our purposes & I wouldn't mind too much spending abit of money for good equipment but only if it's good.

Amazon has a brown-box Netgear Cg 3000d modem/router for 25.75.

Here are my recommendations:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XC ... myde0bd-20

http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Wireless- ... s=WNDR4500

Comcast also has a pretty helpful page that lists all the modems they've tested and their level of compatibility: http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net

Thanx for those recommendations sliqua-jcooter. What does the 1 & 3 star for Cert mean in that Comcast modem page :?:
I always had SurfBoard modems & the latest one I had was the SB120 before I moved out of my parents a couple years ago. Our net plan didn't have docsis 3 but the modem worked OK so I imagine that SB121 would be just as good but I also noticed the SB6141 in that list. Would the SB6141 be better than the SB121 :?: I had a Netgear router there too which worked pretty good but I forget which model it was. In theory thou it seems like a modem/router combination would be better than having both because they'll be only one piece of equipment for the net to go through instead of two but some of the reviews for the combination 1s are pretty bad & recommend having both things instead of a duel. Do you guys think it's better to have to have both things instead of a duel :?:

I honestly don't know what the stars are. I'm assuming it's something like the channels used for uplink and downlink frequencies match perfectly between the modem and CMTS (network device at the cable end that connects to the modem). There were basically three things I was looking for on that page for the router/modem:

1) More stars
2) IPv6 support (on Modem *and* router)
3) Not a brand that generally sucks at making routers/modems (Linksys, D-Link).

I did more research on modems & figured out the stars for Certification has to do with how well it's been tested. It makes sense that SB6141 would have less stars than 121 sense 141 is newer. It's rating on Amazon was about as good as the 121 with 4 something stars out of 5. The main difference between the 141 & the 121 according to forums & reviews I've read from people who had both is that the 141 can bond to 8 downstream channels whereas 121 bonds to 4 but both bond to 4 upstream. So the 141 has a faster potential max theoretical download speed but it didn't make a difference sense cable companies aren't as advanced as that. I decided to get the 141 sense it's more advanced technology so I can upgrade latter. I got a black box one on eBay for $76 & free shipping which was cheaper than the other black & white 1s on eBay(except auctions that are ending daye ss from now & will go up), Amazon & NewEgg. The difference between black & white is that the white is the retail & black is the one Motorola sends to cable companies. All the other modems I had were black so I lucked out that the best deal was for a black one; I would of got it if it was whit sense they're the same but I'm used to black.

I still need to get a router but I tend to take things one step at a time. I may wait a month for new statements to start on my credit cards; I pay the bills before they're do but I won't have to be as tight with my money for this period. It would give me more time to research routers & for others to reply with router ideas.
