BIOS Problems

I recently built my own PC as discussed elsewhere on this forum and, although it's operational, I'm having some trouble using the BIOS software. At first it was fine, but now every time I go in there I can't use the mouse and I can't use the up and down arrows on the keyboard. Also, sometimes the BIOS won't boot the OS from start-up and I have to go into the BIOS menu and then exit the BIOS which seems to do the trick.
I've done a bit of research online and it looks like I may have caused the problem by creating hard drive partitions and deleting them; certainly I had no problems with BIOS prior to that. I guess I'm posting because I want to make sure I'm on the right track and resetting the CMOS is the way to go. Also, there is an option in the BIOS menu to reset the BIOS to default optimised settings. Would that do much the same thing?
My PC has the following specs:
- Asus M5a97 motherboard with latest BIOS revision, AMD Athlon II CPU (2.8 Ghz) and DDR3 2GB RAM
- Linux Mint installed to Seagate 160GB SATA hard drive
If you need any more information about the specs of my PC, please ask.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand how creating and deleting HDD partitions would cause problems with your BIOS/Firmware. The only thinkg that I could suggest right off would be to reset your BIOS/Firmware to defaults, then go back and reset Bus and CPU frequency clock multipliers appropriate to your system, (If this is available with that motherboard) and not overclock. Also Disable the Secure Boot option, set your boot order sequence, and reboot.
