Aaaaarrggghhh!! Good Grief!

My new laptop broke after 3 months, and it was a super expensive HP with windows 8.1.

The desktop occasionally shows no icons, and the windows 8 apps dissapear as soon as I open them, and they show a blank icon in the taskbar. They start to open for less than a second before returning to the desktop.

And the WiFi wont turn on. I try to be good to my comp., I have Antivirus and Antimalware.

Someone help pretty please!

It should still be under warranty after only 3 months. I suggest you take it back and have it "professionally" repaired. I've got a Windows 8.1 laptop, bought only a few months ago and windows update stopped working and started giving an unhelpful error message. I ended up reinstalling Windows 8.1 from scratch from the recovery partition and it is working now - not that I use Windows 8.1 (spit) any more. At the same time as reinstalling Windows I also installed Kubuntu and now use that as the default operating system. Windows 8.1 is a disaster. A train wreck of an operating system. My laptop also came with Microsoft Office home and student edition and even that didn't work properly - another meaningless error message, so I uninstalled it. I use Libre office now under Kubuntu and it does everything I want without all the bloat and licence issues.

What do you bet that you have a virus/spyware/malware problem.

The solution is obvious: erase the disk and reinstall from scratch. Don't even try bothering to repair it.

A virus on Windows 8.x can't physically harm your computer (courtesy of driver signature, UEFI, and secure boot). If it's only been three months, the warranty should cover it. HP laptops are infamous for overheating, though.

Speak of the devil. My new Windows 8.1 laptop has decided to self-destruct again; or rather Windows 8.1 has self-destructed. It is no longer able to get any new updates. Windows Update error 8024402F. I had this problem last time and ended up reinstalling Windows 8.1 from scratch from the recovery partition then it worked fine. Just booted into Windows again for the first time in a month (I made the computer dual-boot with Kubuntu and always use that now). Anyway Windows update says it is borked again. Windows 8.1 is the biggest pile of unstable garbage ever produced by Microsoft. I'm tempted to say f**k it and just wipe Windows 8.1 from the hard drive completely and give the disk space to Kubuntu as I hardly use Windows anyway now. :x

Never buy a successor to a stable version of Windows. They oscillate between good, bad, good, bad, etc.

I never buy a new computer unless the old one is broke or there are other pressing reasons. Unfortunately this meant I ended up getting Vista, missing 7, getting 8.1 Anyway, I'm done with windows now. I'm going 100% Linux. I've had enough of crappy Microsoft products. I spent most of my working life writing commercial application software for Windows computers in large companies plus lots of specialist shareware applications that I still sell via my website. However, Microsoft is making it more and more difficult for small developers to survive by making it more and more difficult to install third party software on their computers; yet they like to charge small developers a fortune for keeping up to date with the latest professional version of visual studio. Something has to give. It is the "Microsoft way or the highway" and after 30 years of developing software "the Microsoft way" I've decided to take the highway; Microsoft can shove Visual studio and they can shove windows, I'm done with both. I'm now concentrating on developing applications in C++ for Linux.

I'm contemplating Linux too.
