I've got a quandary, guys. I have a three year old iPod touch that isn't holding a charge, but my dad wants me to use my smartphone as a music player, because I can transfer the files on the microSD card (my dad got me a 64GB microSD card, which why I am asking this Q). What do you think I should, get a newer iTouch or stick with my smartphone? (I will mention, if I ever downgrade my cell phone to a flip phone, I won't have much use for the microSD card.)
So, I am on the fence as to what to do with my iPod touch, use my phone as my music player or get a newer one........ this is a tough decision!

That's actually a tough question, because while I'm an Android fan, I will admit that the iPhone has a better headphone amp and DAC than most Android phones, as well as support for true line-level output. The Bluetooth audio output on an iPhone is better than the Android devices I've used as well, with louder, clearer audio. I'm not sure about the Bluetooth, but I assume most of the other things I mentioned would apply to the iPod Touch as well.
Now, if you're not as picky about audio quality, or you're simply going to be listening on headphones, an Android phone should do just fine for playing music. In addition, Android gives you more options for things like music players, equalizers, and supported audio formats. Android can play FLAC out of the box, but iOS can't.
It really depends on what you want, but I wouldn't see the point of buying a dedicated iOS device for music unless I was using it to hook up to a car audio system.
Why not just upgrade to an iPhone 6?
If you can buy an iPhone 6 on contract you can get a 128GBs phone for $399 (iPhones retain their values, so you can sell it for a good amount a few years down the road).
A new iPod Touch maxes out at 64GBs at $299 (though comes in more colors and is a year behind the current iPhone models in specs).
I have a feeling you are using it for more than just music.
For a $100 more, you get an iPhone with double the memory, good camera (both pictures and video), and Apple Pay (currently the safest and easiest way to pay with a credit card).
Also the motion co-processors are decent at measuring distances, steps, and elevation.
If you are unable to upgrade your phone, just get the new iPod Touch (since that is obviously what you want).
