omg that had to be really hot to melt the casing of that cord!! luckily it didnt cause any fire, have you contacted macintosh/apple corp about this??(maybe theres a recall) did you have the laptop plugged in all the time? maybe battery was in after a charge and was left connected??? just hope mac/apple fixes this and you get a refund or a better cord.

good luck in hopes they get this fixed

thanks, but not looking to troubleshoot this here.

I know I'm going to get a new mbp or a replaced logic board and display. I'm still in warranty. I scheduled an appointment at the genius bar for 3:35.

still, if this IS an issue, and there is no recall it might be good to make them aware somehow, I don't exactly know how their consumer protection wing operates, but I imagine they'd be happier to find out before someone got hurt

This is quite normal as far as I'm aware.

Well, maybe not 'normal', but isn;t rare.

I have a macbook pro.... I suppose I ought to be scared, but my power cable looks intact, for now. I've had it for about 4 months...

ive had mine for about 5 months. It looked perfectly intact and then just started melting. The process only took a couple hours. it was spontaneous.

i just asked a guy i know who is really good with computers.
i also showed him the pictures. i also told him what i have read from your posts, that you have had it for 5 months, stuff like that.
this is what he said:

Quote:
what's probably messed up is the battery. you should check to see if it was recalled. what's happening is the battery is sending to much energy through the cord, more than needed, but since the mac can't tell, it still tries to get energy from the plug, so it's using power faster than it's getting it, this makes it send more energy to the cord so it can send more back which fills up the current making it overheat. you should check to see if your battery was recalled, even if it wasn't get a new one, along with a new cord...

i barely get it, i hope it helps you though

edit: i'm glad it wasn't on my lap when that happened. it may have been painful
