http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/6/71637 ... ne-android

This makes me VERY happy!! !

I already signed up to beta-test on my old Asus TF101.

My old TF101 is so much better for so many things than my T100 Win8.1 tablet is... Its got better reading and comics apps, better games, etc.

The only advantage my T100 has is the ability to get work done. Once I can produce/edit MS Office documents on my android tablet, I'll finally have the perfect portable Work/Play machine!! !
:D

to be honest, MSoffice is decidedly meh, i have setpped away from it to use openoffice on my last OS reinstall, when they started charging for the MS version again.
openoffice does all the useful things that MSoffice does (including saving/editing into docx), but does it for free with less memory usage.

between openoffice on my pc and laptop and google docs on my mobile and tablet, i got all the text editors i'll ever need, completely for free.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had about the same feature set as that found in OpenOffice, which is already available for tablets. --This is really nothing more than MS trying to hold onto their market for paid products by having a free version available.

If they retain the same functionality as the PC version than it would be nice, otherwise I don't see any reason to get excited over it.

It should have the same functionality.

...and the reason to get excited about it has to do with FORMATTING.

I've used TONS of supposedly MS Office compatible office suits for andriod. Most of them work okay but there are always formatting errors when you go from the android app to MS Office.

I do tons of academic writing and most of it is submitted electronically. Most of it has to be done in APA (American Psychological Association) format. The format has to be correct and the only way to ensure that it will be is to produce the documents in the SAME program they will be read in--MS Office/Word.

Heh.... I'm just a lowly Social Science undergrad with ambitions to become a lowly Social Science grad student someday.

But, it is interesting.

So, last night I actually got selected to test the new version of MS Office.

I went up to the website and registered/setup my profile. Everything was Great until I read the testing requirements...

All tablet must run Android 4.4.

The problem is, Asus stopped supporting the TF 101 at Android 4.0.

So, I bit the bullet, rooted the tablet, and installed a custom version of 4.4 that I found on a TF community site.

I gotta say, my TF runs really great with the new OS. I was thinking about getting a Nexus 9, but not anymore!

I just hope the MS Office developers will allow it to run on a rooted machine.
