It's official, Microsoft is ending the naming convention of Windows OS line.

Windows 10 will be the new platform going forward with continuous updates.

Microsoft hasn't decided on how the naming convention will be going forward...

Will Microsoft follow the OS X naming convention with Windows 10?

Windows 10.1... Anyone?

Like radio, Windows and desktops are now a "mature" product as they found out the hard way with the tiles "Windows 8" operating system.

I'd give up on numbers too if I were Microsoft. They apparently have no idea how to use them. The follow-up to the Xbox and Xbox 360 is the Xbox One, and the follow-up to Windows 8 is Windows 10. I'm sure the next Windows after 10 would have been called Windows 3 or something.

Xbox One is the all one entertainment system and it outsold the PS4 in the U.S. for April.

They purposely skipped Windows 9, because of Windows 9x from the 90s and went to Window 10
Windows 10 also matches Apple who is currently at OS X 10.10, thus makes them look equal in the costumers eyes.

Windows 10 comes with Candy Crush and the traditional 3 games.

So after Windows 10 there'll be Windows 10 Leopard, then Windows 10 Snow Leopard, then Windows 10 Lion, then Windows 10 Mountain Lion, then Windows 10 Housecat and so on :)

You expect too much from Microsoft!

It will go Windows 10:7, Windows 10:9, Windows 10:1, Windows 3.
I can easily see them doing Windows 10:x like they do with Office

I believe Office is Office 16 (at least the Mac version has fully compatible with the Windows version at last)

At least Apple also list the version number next to the name.

Though to be fair Microsoft has no continuity with Windows naming convention.
We went from Windows 1 - 3x to Windows 9x to Windows 2000 and ME, to Windows XP.x to Windows Fundmentals to Vista to 7x to 8x and now to 10x

Finally they decide to maintain a GUI indefinitely and simplify/supplant DOS & NT. Or they'll do the inverse and I'll stop using Windows, ever, for any reason. WINE gets better every day anyways.
