The Internet is Losing its Charm

I remember when I first discovered Know Your Meme. The site was full of random nonsense like Insanity Wolf and Advice Dog. Now the site has basically become a news site ... and Gamergate is probably never going to get off the front page ever.

Another Thing: Cracked.com was once a humor site. Remember that? I first discovered Cracked when someone linked me to an article about the most badass Bible verses. It was just funny. Cracked.com just keeps getting more depressing.

I discovered the internet back in the mid 2000s. The internet was full of random nonsense back then and I loved it. Now it seems that the internet is being taken over by activists. Social activists from both the left and the right are taking up more and more of the internet. I miss the good old silly days.

The internet should not be about activism. It should be about stickmen running into walls and being crushed by shoes.

This is what the internet is really about. I suppose that the internet has "grown up" ... but I don't want it to grow up.

More like the Internet like Internet is dynamic and so is the site zeitgeist. When started using the net it was text based. I actually paid for my first browser; Mosaic. Back then it was essentially information based, heck even porn was a relative rarity. I am sure there are lots of sites you will like, just go searching. Sites morph, evolve, die, etc. look at WP PPR used to be a great forum with some highly intellectual debates, now it seems to have descended into a pit of subjective nonsense. One day the tide will turn again and you will hear the Mystics crying that PPR has been taken over by folk who bow to empiricism.

The fact that you can illustrate what it "should be about" with a link pretty much disproves your point.

The internet is not about anything in particular it is a sort of mirror to the interests of the very, very many people who use it, and particularly the slightly smaller group of people who put content on it.

You can relax, the viking kitties are still there.

Also, if you start ranting too much about what the internet "should be" you are becoming another one of those activists you don't like. Step away from that abyss.

I first discovered the Internet in 1994, when I read a game genie guide about Secret of Mana (which is still online! It says "Damn cats always get their way" about the cat that sells you stuff in the game) and by 1996 we had an Internet connection. Before that, I remember a time before the Internet got big, back when you often had to call or go to the library to get information.

Mobile apps are the downfall of the once-beautiful Internet. Remember images, music, video, interesting fonts and colors which blended into an experience that only a web site with a caring web master could create? Long gone.

Now, we have minimalism writ digital.

The Internet lost its charm a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago. I remember catching the tail end of the Internet's "golden years" in the early 2000s, and since the Internet has gone "mainstream" with social networking and Youtube and all that crap, it's just gone downhill.

I'm just glad that r/montageparodies is still popular.

Some people hate that subreddit. I don't understand why. That sub takes me back to the good old days.

Is it not a growing up thing?

i.e. when you first get engrossed in the net you find a certain humour funny, then get bored of the net, then come back for a reason, then get involved in something, then go back and it just doesn't seem the same... Silly thing is most things on the net get put there and then stay there, so you even be disliking something you liked before?

Most areas of life are like this, clubs, coffee shops, parks, tv shows, magazines, fashion, architecture, etc
