Had been limping along with an eleven year old eMac desk top, and and 8 or 9 year old Apple laptop.
Finally, only weeks ago, I bought this brand new Dell desktop. Kinda wish I had stuck with Apple. But for better or worse I defected to Windows (apples are pricier, and maybe if I get used to Windows I can get an office job, reasons like that, I dunno, seemed like a good idea at the time).

Anyway my new computer runs on Windows 8.2. (which I never even heard of until I bought this computer).

With either Apple or Windows I am jumping forward ten or eleven years (so its like going from a model T to a new Lexus either way). Scary enough. That on top of going sideways from Apple to Windows. My ancient computers couldn't handle 90 percent of the internet. Its a whole new Net out there. I feel like Rip Van Winkle.

So I only have about two weeks experience using Windows 8.2, but since I checked off the box to get Windows 10 (what the hell, I guess I want it) the couple weeks ago when I bought the computer I now get the message that "your FREE Windows 10 upgrade is ready!" in that blue box on my desktop.

So...

Should I upgrade to 10 sooner? Or later? Precisely because I have not yet uploaded much stuff, there is nothing to "back up". So maybe I should go ahead and do it sooner.

Just curious: how does windows 8.2 compare to Windows 7 that so many of you are so attached to? How do 7 and 8.2 both compare to 10?

There is no Windows 8.2. The last version of Windows 8 is v.8.1. Do yourself a favor: install windows 10.

Our company is using Windows 7 and plans to transition over to Windows 10. Articles on the web suggest most of the corporate world is doing the same--avoiding Windows 8.

Learning Windows 10 is likely to be more useful from a job standpoint.

I say avoid Windows 10 until it's had some time to mature. Currently, it has issues with device drivers, automatic updates being forced, and other things like that. 8.1 on the other hand, is pretty good once you install Classic Shell. I also really like 7, but it needs a beefier machine than 8.1, amazingly enough.

if you are coming from windows 8.1, i'd say upgrade sooner rather than later; windows 8.x is a piece of crap on desktops.

i myself run win7, and i am waiting a few months to let windows 10 mature, but i have migrated my dads computer (which had 8.1)

My wife and I went to win 10. It has a few bugs still. I like it but I have got my old linux machine back out. The cpu runs hotter on windows and you need more ram. I had to swap my single core processor to a dual core (T7250) to get it to run. Now my laptop DVD drive doesn't work. My wife liked her win 7 and says that some features are better and some are worse.

So far I have found no problems with Windows 10, but I am using a very recent pc produced by Microsoft, so they can be expected to have gotten the drivers for all the critical components right before signalling that the upgrade was ready.

No problems so far, it seems like the best of Windows 7 with some good additional elements from Windows 8 for tablet users and a few extra ideas from OS X.

I am not sorry I upgraded. If you have a PC of recent vintage and it isn't homebuilt, I would say go for it.
