About four billion years ago Earth, Venus and Mars may have all been habitable. However, a billion years or so after formation, Venus turned into a hothouse and Mars froze into an icebox.

Fermi's Paradox is the apparent contradiction between high estimates of the probability of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations (such as in the Drake equation) and the lack of valid empirical evidence for such civilizations.

My take is that once a civilization becomes capable of destroying itself, it eventually does.

Maybe it develops a doomsday bomb or a pandemic virus. Maybe it poisons itself with environmental pollution. Maybe it enjoys so much good health that population growth exceeds the civilization's ability to feed its own members. Maybe it experiences the Singularity, and there are not enough people left to care for those who are hard-wired into their global network. Maybe they simply died of from the boredom of having machines do everything for them. Or maybe they became so dependent on their technology that they forgot how to live as a civilization.

We're living on borrowed time, folks. The inevitable is bound to happen.

Burroughs was a writer, not a scientist. He was also a heroin addict, a murderer, and a writer of pornographic novels. Burroughs earned his reputation through lifelong subversion of the moral, political and economic systems of modern American society.

Possible alternatives:
The Zoo Hypothesis

Or

We live in a bad neighborhood. All the milky way civilizations keep radio silence and operate in stealth mode because those that don't are quickly targeted by older civilizations and eliminated from the relentless competition for long term survival.

I didn't comment initially as I wanted to see what people said on the article.

When I read these type of articles all I end up thinking is, if you care about the possibility of there been aliens out there do something constructive about finding out, instead of making stupid guess theories. I mean if they invested the time into funding scientists working on actual space flight and space colonisation we might actually get somewhere one day and prove there is life out there.

Personally I think we should forget about finding alien life and just start colonising the galaxy then worry if we bump into them :)

Currently, terrestrial technology is insufficient for humans to go much further than geosynchronous orbit. Unless a controllable source of near-infinite energy and a means to break the light barrier are found and implemented, humanity is doomed to die on the world on which it evolved.

Despite all that, what was wrong with him?
But seriously, Burroughs is one of my favorite authors.

That's what I was meaning they need to spend there time working all that out, instead of making theories about possible life.

Till we can get there who cares :)

WE are the aliens. lol, the humans noticed our oddities and called us this wierd name "autistics". but its obvious, while diverse, most of us are smarter. more advanced. quicker reflexes. anti-social. we are the future. and we use the humans who will help anyone they consider hurt, or dumb. What would these results mean? Been told here I must be a "half pint".

I like the Calvin and Hobbes "answer" about that question.
