Windows 10 will not be forced on me, will it? I no longer see the little icon in my Windows 7 tray - I hope I didn't accidentally reserve the download! Please tell me i didn't - HELP! I don't want Windows 10!

Time for Linux?

One thing I hate about the way that Microsoft does things is that they try to "brand" their versions so that each is quite different in many ways from the previous versions.

That drives me bananas.

The only reason for that is marketing. They want everyone to feel that they have to go out and buy a new version so they try to make it appear to be better than the previous. One result, in my opinion, is that they get rid of what was good and what worked for the sake of "progress".

It all makes sense only if we refuse to consider Microsoft to be a computer company or a software company. They are a marketing company that just happens to market software.

No, it sends an ISO file to you via E-Mail which you later download and burn to a DVD/CD ROM or an external hard drive.

That would be one enormous e-mail.

Indeed I should boot it on a Live CD just to check it out. I believe the downloads like 1-5 GB so I'll download it like onto a USB and extract the .iso file to a folder on the school computers then I'll burn it onto a DVD and proceed to boot a live CD and if there is no live CD I guess it will have to get installed on the school computer :).

I once sent an e-mail of about 300 megabytes containing a backup of some data and programs. That was as much as the e-mail server could take.

Send a five gigabyte e-mail to any account on our e-mail servers and I can promise you that it will never be delivered.

Maybe they send a link to their website which contains the .iso file and you click "download" which will prompt the download.

Quote:
When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq

It downloads straight to your device, though you can cancel your reservation/upgrade at anytime.

That would make more sense. Sending an iso by e-mail would be ridiculous.

There's no rush here. The free offer lasts for a year so you have approximately 8760 hours once it's available to make your decision on whether or not you're ready to upgrade to a new Windows Operating System. And that's 8760+ hours for me to enjoy my current operating system and start looking for my misplaced external hardrive so I can back up all my stuff.

I think even if you did reserve the download, you would still have to allow it or disallow it to complete that upgrade...when the time comes, don't think it can just do it automatically. You can also go into your control panel and make sure your system is set to ask permission from you before preforming any/all downloads/upgrades, just to make sure it wont do it automatically.

You still have to go activate the installation and go through the process.
It does automatically download the necessary files to your PC if you are regularly connected to the internet.

I posted this elsewhere....

If you want to be rid of the annoying icon that prompts you to upgrade, go into Windows Update, pull up installed updates and UNINSTALL KB3035583. You likely will need to reboot. Next time it shows it available to install, tell Windows to ignore it.

Debating doing a hardware upgrade before W10.

And I need to come up with a replacement for Windows Media Center, need to get back on the NextPVR Kodi thing. Or screw it and leave the computer W7 and waste my time gaming.

I reserved it on one of my computers, one that I don't use for very much. I want to experiment before it goes on my other machines.

I don't know why it would disappear from your machine, because the machine I reserved it on still has the icon.
