With returns of over %100 during the 2008 GEC, and making $1 billion USD on Black Monday(24 Aug 2015) it shouldn't surprise anyone that Mark Spitznagel gets noticed.

Spitznagel has oft been called the world greatest bear for his uber-perma-bear views of current markets. He has a long term association with Nassim Taleb who made at least 35 million on Black Friday in 1987 and who is the famed author of The Black Swan.

What some may not know is that Taleb had a long-term friendship with the Venerable Benoit Mandelbrot of Fractal-fame and that much of the Maths that Taleb and Spitznagel use, they learned from Mandelbrot.

This is what Spitznagel does~~~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyGtiiGBEc8 obviously greatly simplified.

Here is Benoit and Nassim in 2008~~~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLFkQdiXPbo

Here is a brief piece of Taleb's perspective~~~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e6UKCJt-g8
and his work on anti-fragility~~~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3REdLZ8Xis

Enjoy.

OFF-TOPIC
I like where Nassim Nicholas Taleb says he doesn't closely listen to reporters' questions, and answers randomly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e6UKCJt-g8 around 9:00
Something I wanna try in normal conversation.

I enjoyed this, especially the talk about fragility and Seneca. Thanks for sharing. :thumleft:

Another quote, he said (something like this, I'm lazy to search for it again, you'll get the point) the only way to know you are not a machine, that you are alive, is if you like variability.
Now this is just something a human said, might be right, might be wrong, but I wanna be cheeky and apply it to people.
I wonder what that means for people who have a steady routine and don't like change, hmm...

He can be quite scholarly at times.

I didn't know Mandelbrot was still alive, I thought he died.

He was responsible for the iteration that, when plotted, yielded my favourite fractal picture.

He is deceased.
We lost a truly great man when he died.
I know a man who was close to him.
Kind, gentle, fiercely brilliant, non-conformist, generous with his time, etc...
One of the greatest minds of that century imo.

When I learned what he taught it forever changed my view of the entire Universe.

Oh, I was right then. He was a great man and he changed history for sure.

You're welcome. I found it while perusing Google Images for pictures of Benoit Mandlebrot, I really enjoyed it when I saw it and wanted to share it with the rest of the world.
