Look, the emperor is being embarrassed in a reverse case of "so fine that only *the best* can see it".
Einstein hid the aether under a cloak of mathematical invisibility. It's there, but you just can't "see" it. He renamed the volume that it occupied "spacetime" then squashed, and stretched it.
But you can do all that with a field of 1D atoms - and it doesn't hurt your head thinking about it.
There's a huge amount of non pi biased atoms spewing from all the stars. This makes for background noise. Some percentage of those atoms have the magic length to energy ratio (energy = massless momentum) that lets it turn just that pi ratio amount when it runs into any other atom in any other trajectory. All those start circling and whenever they run into a barrier that hits them multiple times. They deflect around and circle out quickly near the "surface" and higher atom density to eventually loop back through the lower density further away. An egg shaped orbit. This makes a cloud of increasing density of circling atoms around any matter. And since electrons stick to and are stuck to the crossing points of the 3D paths (my best guess without an equation) the barriers just keep getting bigger as they clump. The quantum gravity redistribution of angular momentum pulls any matter closer to any other matter. The entropy/time/gravity energy is constantly leaving any unstable matter in a less than equilibrium energy density. The less dense the field, the steeper the gradient, the faster the flow, the faster the clock. The higher the density, the shallower the gradient, the slower the transfer, the slower the clock. Aether = massless 1D atomic field = gravitational field = entropy field = time sink. Move any matter quickly in this field and its local field_density_over_time increases and its clock slows.
All the circling atoms tighten their radii as the distance to random collision shortens in the higher density fields. This "shortens the ruler" because it is made of matter. So you get a *constant* clock rate to distance ratio. That's what the "speed of light" is, a constant distance to "time" (matter clock rate) ratio [nothing to do with "speed"]. Time is our entropy rate - not a dimension.
Therefore: Stuff squashes, space does not squash.

"Truth" is the best logic that fits the available evidence.
Logic is derived from the structure and iterative nature of the universe.
Gather evidence, apply logic, argue until agreement and that defines the "truth", for now.
If you don't agree, gather more evidence, strengthen your logical arguments.
This is the first tenet of the House of Logic.
