The odds of winning the new Powerball lottery are 292 million to one. The payout is over 1 billion dollars. That would make it appear to have a positive expectation. Should I buy a few tickets?

For my own entertainment, I got a ticket with the numbers 1,2,3,4 and 5 and the powerball is 1. Same odds as any other combination, right? :)

Odds are something like 99.99999% against any one person winning; but somone must eventually win.

I bought my ticket with winnings from another ticket, so it's not as if I'm throwing hard-earned money away.

The winning Powerball numbers were drawn Wednesday night: 8, 27, 34, 4, 19 and the Powerball of 10.

The three winning tickets were sold in: California, Tennessee and Florida. With a cash value in the very desirable neighborhood of 350 million dollar. Sound like a positive expectation to me, worthy of a few tickets.

May the winners spend their money wisely. Some of these big winners overestimate how much they really have.

Close to 60% of lottery winners declare bankruptcy within 15 years. That must be one wild ride.
