Windows 10 has already downloaded, but it has not installed! I selected "download updates but allow me to decide to install them. It downloaded anyway, and somehow the uninstalled files have greatly damaged my computer's ability to operate at full bandwidth! Plus my computer keeps loading up with files taking up space on my hard drive! When I watch videos, they are generally watchable, but they are becoming increasingly jittery! Plus I can't download or upload ANYTHING AT ALL! I did everything I could to prevent these files from downloading, and have nothing but headaches with my computer now! And I am on a fixed budget, and can't afford to have it serviced! HELP!

Cant you just delete the files if you haven't installed windows 10 yet, if I understand right it sounds like the files may just be taking up a lot of space. Or am I not quite understanding the problem.

You're right, it's a hardware rootkit payload. Lucky for you I already shot 10 full of holes on this machine...

So what am I supposed to do NOW? I have no idea how to do anything, and I have such a limited budget that I can't afford to take in my computer for service!

In the land of proprietary software, Windows has you.

GWX Control Panel can help. If you need to, download the exe on another machine and transfer it over with a USB drive, or save it to your phone's SD card, hook it up to your computer, and get the file from there.
http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

Now keep in mind, this is not a complete solution; in order to keep all that Win10 BS off your machine, you have to set Windows Updates to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". Then, once you do this, download ONLY security updates and drivers, and hide everything else. M$ is crafty though, and they want to push Win10 on people, so you might have to hide the same updates multiple times over.

Also, uncheck "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates."

You might want to try this.

It has come to a point in time that things like software and the internet are no longer a choice, but a necessity. And things like this are forced upon people, stressing the heck out of everybody. F*ck you Microsoft and Apple.

Why can't the world tell them both to f*ck off and just use Linux?

Gate's idea of having a computer in every house was a fantastic one. But now we're all slaves to it.

And Facebook has a lot to answer for too.

They take advantage of tribal instincts and shallow reasoning. We could have everything they offer in a cheaper and more efficient way with free---as in speech---software, and everyone would benefit from it, not just geeks. But, of course, if you have to be a geek to understand it, most people won't want to, lest they be associated with us and our unpopularity rub off

 Thank you smudge!

I think the best antidote for Windows is Android & the best antidote for Android is Linux, if we're going to get chimerical about it.

Well said. They rely on peoples' mindlessness in other words. I mean computers were never that reliable, at least since Windows 98 days. But they haven't improved either, and the masses rely so heavily on it, like we're ruled by it.

They've dumbed down software so much now, and I can't stand the having to flick through different sets of icons on Word to access something. The dropdown menus were far more efficient and you could use a keyboard to access them. Now you have large dumb icons.

For mobile technology, they've dumbed down the Hotmail/Live site so much that you can't even add attachments anymore. And with the PayPal mobile site when I log in, you can't change the delivery address, it just selects one for you despite entering a different one at the other site's checkout page! So in order to simplify something, they just get rid of the whole feature. Who needs to attach important documents anyway?

I swear though, apart from the media, that software and websites are designed to dumb people down even more, or just grind at them so much that they give up hope.

I don't download apps anymore from Apple because you have to log in with a password every time. There's no office software on this thing, and Safari keeps refreshing tabs so you lose data if you've composed an e-mail or filled out a form. I guess Apple expects people to be so thick they can't multitask.

You're probably right. I wonder if it's worth getting Linux for an iPad. Is that possible?

It is however you'd probably want it virtualized, idevices are very strange about hardware peripheral inputs. iPad linux would probably call for a hard-modded keyboard.

iPod Linux however is alive & well! I used to play DOOM on a 2gb nano.

Eusocial software gets crazy real fast. That's why I work elsewhere.

As spiderpig has emphasized, there is little you can really do to halt Windows 10's installation on your PC. But to be honest, it is not really as disastrous as you might believe. I really think WIN10 is more like Windows 7 then Windows 8 which I utterly despise. Again, I think you will not find the transition to Windows 10 as abrupt as you might be led to believe.

Good luck!

We've got audit-certified machines at work that can't simply be upgraded so I had to research this a bit last week. The following is mostly for techies, but I'll see what I can do to make it more accessible later, when I get the chance. My apologies for not being able to do so right now, but I wanted to get the info out there.

Steps to block the upgrade:
Open the Registry Editor (search for regedit in the Start Menu and run it).
Set DisableOSUpgrade to 1 in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
Set ReservationsAllowed to 0 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade

(from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351 )

You'll need someone to use a Windows built-in utility called RedEdit to make the changes. I'm on a Linux box right now, next time I'm on a windows box I'll see if I can make a proper .REG file you can download and find somewhere to post it (unless someone beats me to it, please feel free to do so). It's something you'd download to your desktop, right click and select "merge". That's it.

Also to those who are more tech savy, the following updates will install a group policy that will block the upgrade (pretty much the same as making the Reg edits plus extra sauce)
