Ive been having problems for the last 3 days, keep being disconnected.
Messed about with ethernet drivers, system restore, phoning my ISP.
Never thought about the cables.
I just bought a new lead and everything seems fine. Hope it stays that way.
These things do my head in.

When we first got wireless in the house it was very bad reception and didn't work very well. Then my Dad said he'd read that sometimes it works better if the router is upstairs so we tried that and it's worked great ever since. I can even take my laptop into the garden and get interent right at the bottom of the garden.

Was your lead very old? Or maybe it got chewed by animals, my gerbils did that twice to me.

No animals to chew on it.
Not very old, but i thought these things lasted forever, especially if you just plug them in and leave them.
These things conspire against me.

Which lead are we tlking about here? The ethernet cable (The one that goes between your computer and your modem if you have ADSL) should be ok if it was new when you got it.
But the phone lead is a different story. Any breakages in it, including anywhere between you jack and your connection box, which is placed somwhere outside up to a few miles from your house, can cause problems.

Ethernet, i think it's fixed now.

I was thinking of buying a new machine again.
Trying a new cable was a last resort.
I have no common sense.

I have never needed to replace any ethernet cables, the ones I do have have lasted a long time, plus I use wireless for my laptop anyway, I also found out that my particular wireless router is undetectable by the Nintendo DS for some reason, by actually trying to connect a Nintendo DS lite to it, the router is a D-Link DSL-G604T so don't get one of those to use with a DS, you have been warned, seems fine for other things such as computers though

The phone cable to the router was recently replaced with a shorter one, the original cable (which came from the ISP supplied USB modem) was packed up with the old router which is being sold very soon, and worked well, the current cable was unused until a few weeks ago and seems fine

although I have had problems with my connection they have been down to the ISP or British Telecom

no point buying a new computer if the cables break as they are very easy to get hold of
