I got 1 gig of ram of a mate today from his old computer which broke a while ago. He doesn't know much about computers so I retrieved it from the computer then installed it when I got home.
2 gigs now :)
that made my day

Do you know what clockspeed it is?
Since its kinda at your loss if its slower then your other memory...
If you got...
1GB RAM, 677MHz
and
1GB RAM, 266MHz

They will BOTH operate at 266MHz, And that will make your computer slower :)

nah, I'm pretty sure it's faster then my previous memory. I have noticed a significant speed improvement (starting up) though. Haven't tried games yet. My first trial game will probably be Oblivion :P

Vista will run better if you decide to install it or are able to on your machine because you added this much RAM.

Vista uses more RAM then XP, So you will have a performance loss if you install Vista.
And I personally do not recommend getting vista until like... next year, Its still too early in developement.

I have no need for Vista right now.
What is the cheapest (legal) way of getting a copy?

Have it included with a new computer. If you allready own a copy of XP, you can try upgrading to Vista Home Basic for ~$100, or buy it outright for ~$200. That's as cheap as you're getting for a legal version, most likely.

I would put up a new thread about "upgrading" to vista from xp. What I'm seeing is, it isn't a cut and dry deal, like it's advertised to be.

if you are running windows xp then you will never need more than a gig of ram, even when playing games like world of warcraft
