Yes, that is a computer completely submerged in vegetable oil. Yes, it does work. Only the drives are unsubmerged.

Apparently it works pretty well, this type of oil not being electrically conductive. When I can afford it (Dad got laid off, we're likely gonna move) I'm going to be trying this.

It supposedly also works with mineral oil. For those of you who don't want to browse that site but do want to try it..

1.Vegetable oil or mineral oil, enough to completely submerge the board in.
2.the power supply is safe
3.Don't try this with brand new systems
4.Do not have the fish tank higher then the cables running out of it.
5.Make sure the oil doesn't get contaminated, while they say you don't have to change it I would probably about once a year take half of it out and put a fresh half in.
6.Have a fish tank pump moving the oil
7.Make sure if you use an alternative substance that it is not water soluble.

OK, so it runs, but why bother? Is there some performance gain?

OK... I looked at the sight.

My thoughts...

Pros:

1. No need for cooling or heatsinks - The power supply fan can serve to circulate the oil through out the system, if not, then convection generated by the hot components will also serve to circulate the oil

2. Looks pretty cool seeing a computer sitting in oil

Cons:

1. System must be assembled first, before immerson any dissasembly would require plucking the system out and applying liberal amounts of dawn to get rid of all the oil

2. Oil can interfere with electrical conductivity, if oil gets between any of the connectors, system don't work!

3. Oil can turn rancid

It will also be very quiet, but I would rather go with a watercooling system, that way you dont get oil all over the place. It is an interesting experiment though.

Actually, the guys say that they've changed components to other non-oil computers just fine.

Also, oil being nonconductive (unless contaminated) it doesn't damage any connections.

They're psychotic because they have submerged a complex electronic device underneath five or more gallons of vegetable oil, and it's actually working. XD
