Windows defender Vs expensive security software

I have a new (Windows 10) laptop and want to protect it from viruses. I don't ever use torrent sites and avoid links and sites that look dodgy.

When I bought new laptops in the past, I was sold expensive licenses for various softwares. For example, Trend Micro. Some of them made it easier to scan files, folders, etc. for security threats, but it's expensive and you have to keep paying for it, and if you don't, the Windows defender turns on.

Is Windows defender okay? Should I have something more?

Antivirus software is useless regardless which one you use.

Windows Defender is marginally useful.
The rest are likely to introduce new vulnerabilities.
The companies selling them are con artists.

Windows defender is decent, but no more than that.
There are some free providers that do a better job; i myself use Avast.
It ever let anything trough that was harmful (to my knowledge), and even though it does try to sell me its premium version (with some more options which are useless to me), it isn't intrusive in doing so.

As far as free protection software, Avast gets good marks from me
