I've been trying to make an email account that doesn't require an alternate or "backup" email, a telephone number, that is connected to previous email addresses in any way, one that requires identity information (real name, date of birth, etc) or enables any of the scanning and spying methods. Avoiding getting my email caught by robots that constantly send me spam would also help.
However, all the tips I found about this online contradict themselves - they say they require no alternate, then won't let you make an account unless you provide an alternate to retrieve an "activation key."
I want a clean email, unconnected to anything to do with me or what I may do online.
And no, it's not because I've done anything underhanded or intend to. But I'm cautious about people just plainly snooping, especially if I provide an email address to a potential employer and they followed it back here, for example, checking up on me. Part of the reason I don't have of the usual "social media" is for privacy. It defeats the purpose of maintaining privacy online if people can just track you by our email.
I got a hotmail account back when there was none of this. You just created the account with your desired name and password, and that was it. Do any providers still operate this way? How do you go about creating a clean, untraceable email? The closest info I've got so far would be to create our own through a domain name, but even then, creating one may be just as traceable by payment methods, etc.

I think it is almost impossible nowadays to create an anonymous free email account; they tend to all require you to give a mobile/cell number for verification/registration, largely to reduce the number of spammers who sign up. The few email providers that remain such as inbox.com are closing all free accounts and will require payment soon, and thus you lose anonymity there too. Having your own domain isn't anonymous as the domain can easily be looked up to see who owns it.

I use http://mail.com, there are many ads but they don't need your phone number.

When you register a domain, your full name and address will be visible through a WHOIS query. However, you can often have these details be hidden, for a slightly higher price. Domains by proxy I think it's called.

Different TLD's have different rules and procedures for this. The TLD is the last part of a domain name, e.g. .com, .org, .nl, .uk etc.

Have you considered making your own personal mail server? No snooping and everything under your control.

You can make your own server, but then it will be on a domain that is ultimately attached to you.

Also postfix and other email servers are hard to maintain and keep secure. People want them as relays. And it's hard to match the level of spam protection that Gmail has.

I wonder if you can get an email account somewhere, call it "A", giving them your phone number. Then create another email account on another provider, "B", giving them "A" email as a reference. Then, delete "A". Then your "B" server is free and unassociated. Know what I mean? You could go to "C" if you wanted. Maybe some haxxor sites have better advice than here.

You can use a service like freeDNS rather than a dedicated domain.

You can sign up with a website hosting provider and use their email servers.

I don't think you can register a domain with fake information, domains aren't free so you have to give them payment details at the very least.
