I'd recommend a Lenovo Thinkpad if you're not bound to Dell, Toshiba, or HP. They are well-made, reliable, and durable, and you can get them for under $500.

Thinkpad or Dell XPS 13. I throw as much cash as I can in my laptops as they're work necessities & before the tiny Dell I used my X series Thinkpad daily. Thinkpads are the primary choice on space stations for example.

I just did an eBay search for "hp pavilion i5" and saw several nice machines within your price range.
