it can render anything you model in it

there's also blender but it is extremely difficult to learn: blender.org

You can go through those tutorials, after that you should have some knowledge of the program to be able to use it.

Depends on the integrated video I suppose. I remember it ran on a computer with a SiS 515 chipset which is probably the most craptacular video chipset you could possible have.

gmax is another 3D rendering tool; it's basically a scaled-down version of 3D Studio Max.

Are ANY of the programs recommended good for replacing a unit in a RTS game?

gmax is specially good for 3d design, it's based in 3ds max, but free!
Same user interface, almost same tools.
It can't do renders per default, but there are free plugins just do a little search
