Is it normal when you buy a new laptop these days that there is only a note explaining on/off button and no user manual to download. I followed the start up explanation when I first switched it on but it was very brief.

My last laptop was also my first and the instructions needed to be downloaded which I did not know how to do at the time so I had to learn everything by trial and error. I doubt I used a fraction of what it could do because of this.

With this one I was determined to do finally learn properly, but I can't even do what I could on the other one because none of what worked on that works on this. I can't even copy an image onto this post for example although I can copy images onto files because nothing is giving me the address. This is so frustrating and I'm fed up of it making me feel stupid.

Unfortunately not providing a proper manual seems to be becoming the norm for many electronic devices and appliances: I curse this trend regularly.

If you type “make model code”+manual* into google it should bring up links to places where you can download the manual in pdf format and then print it off to refer to.
You may need to do that for both the laptop itself, and the operating system (windows 10 I assume for a new one)

i.e: for my printer I’d type in “Epson WF-7525”+manual.

Hello Karamazov

Will I need to install Adobe Acrobat on this one before I download anything? (that was the missing linc last time).

What is pdf format and if it gives me a choice of places to download to, where should I pick?

When I right clic, the choices I get, are they dependent on the laptop make or windows 10?

Sorry these all prob sound like really stupid questions.

Evening.
Yes, you would need to have Acrobat on the machine: it’s a free download from Adobe’s website however.

“.pdf” is the document format that goes with Acrobat.
It’s the most common way to share leaflets, books, manuals etc.
Pick the manufacturer’s website to download from where possible.
You can save the files anywhere you like in theory, however I’d recommend being systematic about where you keep files, and let program installations be where they want to be.

Do you mean the choice of where to save the file download?
Or the choice of what to do with regards to the link you’ve right-clicked on?
Either way that’ll be down to windows, unless the website you’re on has chosen to limit your options.

Don’t apologise!
Or worry about it for that matter :)

Thank you, glad about Acrobat since I managed that last time. My fear was they all take something different.

The right click question was separate to the others, I meant in general when I right click are the options down to the type of computer rather than windows 10?

There's an application called Sumatra which can also open PDF files.

I use Okular on Linux.
It's a universal document viewer that supports the following formats:

PDF, PS, Tiff, CHM, DjVu, Images, DVI, XPS, ODT,
Fiction Book, Comic Book, Plucker, EPub, Fax.

The KDE team have made it available for MS users and
it is free to download from the MS store:
