I have a store-bought game that I am aware is an old game, but it worked before on the exact same disc and on the exact same Windows 7 computer, but won't seem to install now. I uninstalled the game because I had made too many custom (sandbox) games saved on it that I couldn't seem to delete, so I thought that if I uninstalled then reinstalled the whole game then I could start again. But it won't let me reinstall it, it stops installing when it gets to about 58% and the disc drives makes funny noises and the computer crashes.

How do I reinstall this game successfully? I so badly want to play it again. Why are computers weird like this?

Hard to say, maybe the disc is damaged in some non obvious way (discs don't last forever) or your version of Windows 7 is no longer compatible. Or it could be a simple issue that can be fixed.

What game is it? Maybe you can just download it off the internet. I just did that yesterday with Zoo Tycoon classic.

Download Ccleaner and run it both in cleanup mode and registry. I suspect you are having an issue with old files sitting on your hard drive that are causing the problem.

A while ago I was having problems with office 2010 failing to install and doing the above cured it.

Worth a try anyway.

I did try this but it didn't make any difference. I feel so disappointed, as I love this game and can spend hours on it.

The game is Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. I don't think the disc is damaged, because it worked fine before I uninstalled the game, then on the same day I tried reinstalling the game and it wouldn't let me. It just gets to precisely 58% of installment then the disc drive starts making odd clicking and spluttering noises. I think it has something to do with me uninstalling it, but it installed and worked fine before when I very first installed it, which was on the same Windows 7 computer.
I don't like downloading games like that online, as there are risks and even if it says free it still ends up wanting you to pay something and I don't do online banking, because I don't have much money and I'm afraid of being ripped off or hacked.

Sounds like a bad CD drive. They only last maybe 5 yrs tops on average, and if it's a windows 7 machine, it's likely close to that. You can test it by trying to install another game off of a CD, and see if it completes successfully. Failing that, a new optical drive is maybe $20, replace yours and see if it works. There are also external ones that plug in via USB.

I think it may well be the disc being dirty or something, because I gave it a good wipe and tried installing the game again but this time it stopped at 92% instead of 58%. So if I give it another clean it may install completely.

It says data error cyclic redundancy check after it stops at 92%.

That's Layer 1, Physical.

Either the disk drive is dead, or the disk is.

You might consider looking on Steam. OK, you'll have to buy it but you can go back and reinstall at at time without worrying that you've lost/damaged the disk.

Why does the internet think everyone is made of money? OK I'll buy it if it's not too expensive and I hope I don't get ripped off or anything. Could I just pay for it with my 4G data or do I have to put in all my card details on and pay by card? I'm actually refraining from purchasing anything online other than monthly grocery shopping because I have money to pay rent and bills and so only have a little bit left over each week and I am the type to get into the habit of impulsive purchasing. I am less impulsive in stores for some reason but online it's all too easy.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 on Good Old Games for $10 USD.

Is that £7.69 in UK pounds?

If the disc is damaged or has degraded services such as Steam are the only option open for obtaining old games and you can re-download if needed. Yes, you could buy another disc on Ebay but how long will that work for assuming it works? It's £6.99 on Steam by the way and this appears to include two expansion packs.

I've bought and installed the one from the link one of the members here posted. The only thing is it doesn't always load straight away when I want to play. I have to open it several times, and wait a while, before it starts to do anything. I don't know why.

No, I've put up with that s**t before and it wouldn't let me play the Sims 2, even though I downloaded all the patches and everything. I had to pay loads to get Windows 7 installed back, and since then I could play the Sims 2 and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2.

I HATE Windows 10. By having Windows 10 there is no point in having a computer I might as well just do away with my laptop and just have my phone, because I mostly only use my laptop for games anyway while I use my phone for internet use.

Anyway, when I got this game up on Steam it said that it can be installed on Windows 7 but not Windows 10.

f**k Windows 10, I'd get more joy out of a Windows 94 computer!! ! :P

But it doesn't say anywhere how I can get my game running. It seems that I have to be signed in to my Stream account to be able to load the game, but it keeps banging on about playing with friends. But I'm not interested in playing with friends. This is the exact reason why I hate buying anything online, it seems to be centered around playing with friends. What if your friends don't WANT to play games?

Have you tried downloading it off of gog.com? They have better backwards compatibility options for older games on there.
