According to Wikipedia:

Havana syndrome is a set of medical signs and symptoms experienced by United States and Canadian embassy staff in Cuba. Beginning in August 2017, reports surfaced that American and Canadian diplomatic personnel in Cuba had suffered a variety of health problems, dating back to late 2016.

The US government accused Cuba of perpetrating unspecified attacks causing these symptoms. The US reduced staff at their embassy to a minimum, and U.S. President Trump declared in October 2017 that he believed Cuba was responsible for the attacks.

Subsequent studies of the affected diplomats in Cuba, published in the journal JAMA in 2018, found evidence that the diplomats experienced some form of brain injury, but did not determine the cause of the injuries. A co-author of the JAMA study considered microwave weapons to be "a main suspect" for the phenomenon. A 2018 study published in the journal Neural Computation identified pulsed radio frequency/microwave radiation (RF/MW) exposure via the Frey effect as source of injury, and noted that a microwave attack against the US embassy in Moscow has been historically documented. Other researchers have posited other possible causes for the injuries, including ultrasound via intermodulation distortion caused by malfunctioning or improperly placed Cuban surveillance equipment; cricket noises, and exposure to neurotoxic pesticides. Early speculation of an acoustic or sonic cause was later determined to be unfounded. Some had suggested that the symptoms represented episodes of mass hysteria, but the 2018 JAMA researchers considered a "wholly psychogenic or psychosomatic cause" to be very unlikely, given the physical evidence of brain trauma.

In 2018, US diplomats in China reported problems similar to those reported in Cuba, as well as undercover C.I.A. agents operating in other countries who were negotiating with those countries on ways to counter Russian covert operations around the world.

Originally this was described as some type of sonic weapon. But microwave radiation sounds like it was and is the likely culprit.

Why is this subject important? Well because it is still ongoing and has taken on a global nature. [I suspect there are many actors - Russia, China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea - involved. Maybe I am a bit paranoid but being a little paranoid can be a good thing.]
Whoever was behind the attacks also began going after Americans on American soil.

These attacks have occurred in Cuba, Russia, China, Australia, the United States, England, Poland, Georgia, and Taiwan,

Around fifty years ago, I worked near a tracking radar. This radar emitted microwave energy. One instruction that I received was never stand in front of the radar. Apparently one of the technicians had and he died as a result of this mistake.

How does microwave radiation affect the brain?

The notion of weaponizing microwaves dates back to the Cold War, when, in 1961, an American biologist named Allan Frey discovered that irradiating a human head with microwaves could produce the sensation of sound—even in deaf ears, even from thousands of feet away. Playing with the frequency and intensity of the microwave beam could produce a range of different sensations in a person. In 2018, Frey told the New York Times that the Soviets took immediate notice of his work and flew him to Moscow, where they squired him around secret military facilities and asked him to give lectures about the effects of microwaves on the brain.

Soviet, and later Russian, scientists found that exposing an animal’s brain to microwaves changed the frequency at which neurons fired. Neurons also became suddenly out of sync with one another. Some brain cells in mice were found to have withered. Nerves became damaged. The radiation also showed the potential to disturb the sacrosanct blood-brain barrier and, according to the DIA, resulted in “the alterations of brain function.” The most common symptoms reported in humans who had been exposed to microwaves for long periods of time sounded familiar: headache, fatigue, perspiration, dizziness, insomnia, depression, anxiety, forgetfulness, and lack of concentration.

Douglas Smith, a neurosurgeon who heads the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Brain Injury and Repair and his colleagues research has offered new insights into the Havana Syndrome—if little encouraging news for those suffering from it. In 2019, Smith and his team published a follow-up study that used advanced neuroimaging and brain-connectivity studies to look at the brains of diplomats hit in Havana. This technique showed what less sophisticated imaging had missed. The patients’ brain connectivity was severely affected, especially in the cerebellum and brain networks that control auditory and visuospatial functions. Their volumes of white matter—the inner, deeper part of the brain—were significantly reduced. White matter is made up of axons, the delicate wiring of the central nervous system. According to Smith, it was the axons and their carefully arranged structure that were damaged in people suffering from the syndrome. “If the axons break, that’s it,” he told me. “They won’t reconnect. And you’re not going to grow new axons. You only have the ones you’re born with.” The brain can learn to make up for and work around some of the damage, Smith says, but that takes time and the compensatory mechanisms are often far from perfect.

Who is responsible? Well in many of these attacks, it was the Russians.

A team was assembled at Langley to investigate the incidents overseas. Investigators came to believe that the injuries to victims’ brains were caused by a microwave weapon, which could be beamed at its target through walls and windows, and could even be effective from a couple miles away. The most compelling evidence, however, came from publicly available data. As has been widely reported, mobile phones track people’s movements, and location-data companies accumulate this information and sell it. Using this sort of data, CIA investigators were able to deduce the whereabouts of Russian agents, and place them in close physical proximity to the CIA officers at the time they had been attacked when they were in Poland, Georgia, Australia, and Taiwan. In each case, individuals believed to be FSB agents were within range of the CIA officers who had been hit in 2019. In two of the incidents, location data apparently showed FSB agents in the same hotel at the same time their targets experienced the onset of symptoms.

How was this done?

Well a miniaturized tracking radar could be installed in a van. The shell of the van would probably be fiberglass, because a metal shell would not work. A van is fairly indiscreet and is highly portable.

But there are two parts to this attack. Somehow the target location must be known. Almost like they would need a hidden transponder on the target, otherwise many innocent bystanders would also be affected by the attack.

But then it dawned on me that in our modern world we are all carrying around with us transponders. These are our smart phones.

For example: Shortly after Thanksgiving 2019, according to three sources familiar with the incident, a White House staffer was hit while walking her dog in Arlington, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. According to a government source familiar with the incident, the staffer passed a parked van. A man got out and walked past her. Her dog started seizing up. Then she felt it too: a high-pitched ringing in her ears, an intense headache, and a tingling on the side of her face. According to the source, this had happened to the staffer before. In August 2019, she had accompanied John Bolton, who was then the national security adviser, on a trip to London.

[By now, these attacks were no longer a novel occurrence, and CIA people had come to call it “getting hit".]

Since cell phones can be paired. I wonder if the man that exited the van, paired his cell phone with hers as he passed by her as she walked her dog.

What is to be done against this type of threat?

If you are a target be wary of the cell phones you use. Older (non- GPS, non-smart phone) technology may actually be safer.

Might have to carry a microwave detector with audible alarm. But you must have one that covers the suspected microwave band. This would probably be the range of 300 MHz and 300 gigahertz.

I have been reading The Mystery it Immaculate Concussion. Phenomenal reporting, and all the more terrifying/infuriating that the commander-in-chief of this country is trying to court the leader of an openly hostile foreign power.

How many Americans have been attacked in this way?

Around 60 are said to have been treated by experts at the Center for Brain Injury and Repair at the University of Pennsylvania.

Source: US officials targeted on American soil, across the world by purported sonic attacks

So the actual number of Americans attacked in this manner may be an order of magnitude higher, ~600. This is because not everyone affected has seeked treatment, nor have they requested help from the Center for Brain Injury and Repair at the University of Pennsylvania.

The article was very hostile towards the present Administration. But IMHO, the reality is that several governments are diametrically opposed to the U.S. This includes Russian and it includes China and many other actors. And they commonly work collectively. That is why the first reported incidences of this type of attack occurred in Cuba.

We know that in the 1970s the Soviets used microwave weapons against American diplomats. Maybe with the cooperation of other countries, Putin's Russia is doing it again. Remember the Cuban "sonic attack" on American diplomats that was made public in 2017? Diplomats reported hearing strange sounds, and many suffered hearing and memory loss and brain damage, a condition now referred to as "Havana Syndrome." To this day, we don't really know what happened -- although somebody might.

Microwaves are on the electromagnetic spectrum, along with visible light, UV light, X-rays and radio waves. Thus, they are a form of light, not sound. Yet, it is well established that some types of microwave radiation can cause a person to "hear" clicks or buzzing in his head. The mechanism is unknown, however there is a hypothesis that involves the thermoelastic effect. As the microwave beam causes the brain to expand (ever so slightly), it produces a pressure wave that is perceived as sound -- even though there isn't really any sound.

Scientists study pesticide link to diplomats' 'Havana syndrome'

Quote:
Cuban scientists are helping investigate whether pesticides caused mysterious health complaints from US and Canadian diplomats in Havana that were originally blamed on sonic attacks, a conference heard.

Dozens of embassy officials and their families first reported in 2016 suffering from what became known as "Havana syndrome," with symptoms including dizziness, fatigue and headaches, as well as hearing and vision complications.

US and Canadian authorities initially suspected an attack using some sort of acoustic weapon, which led to heightened diplomatic tensions between Washington and the Caribbean island nation.

But last year a Canadian study suggested the illnesses may have been caused by a neurotoxin in anti-mosquito spray.

Researchers in Cuba and Canada were now working together to study whether the symptoms mirrored those of people with exposure to pesticides, said Cuban Neuroscience Center director Mitchell Valdes-Sosa.

"We are not denying that a group of diplomats felt badly and were sick," he told AFP on the sidelines of a Havana research conference into the illness.

"(But) in many parts of the world there is evidence that if you are exposed to insecticides, even in low doses, chronically, some people develop neurological symptoms."

The results of the research would be available in a month, Valdes-Sosa said.

The spate of illnesses dealt a blow to the historic agreement to improve relations between Washington and Havana forged by the Obama administration.

That accord was scaled back when US President Donald Trump took office and reinstituted sanctions against Cuba.

Amazon periodically sends me an email with a variety of advertisements. So I received one today and did a double take. It was an ad for an EMF Protection Hood.

Image

So why would anyone buy a tin foil hat? Is it a new trend in accessories. The ad says: "The hood will help to protect from everyday exposure to radiation that is all around us. Shielding Efficiency of 99.995% (45dB at 1 GHz). This shielding hood is well designed to protect the most important parts of your head, specifically the brain, from radio frequency radiation, wireless internet routers, cellular towers, cellular phones and more that is in our environment."

And then I pondered if it might provide protection against microwaves. The kind that cause the Havana syndrome.

Maybe this will be a new fashion trend among diplomats.

China's Microwave Weapon

In June clashes between Indian and Chinese troops resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers. Beijing captured two key hilltops after these clashes. According to The Times, a Beijing professor Jin claimed the weapons deployed in late August, weeks after a deadly medieval-style brawl involving rocks and clubs that brought the two nuclear-armed powers closer to war than they have been in 53 years on one of the world's highest-altitude battlefields. Jin hailed the Chinese forces for 'beautifully' executing the alleged move with the microwave weapons, which he said cleared out Indian troops without violating a ban on gunfire along the disputed border. The microwave weapons heat water molecules in the same way as the kitchen appliance, targeting water under the skin and causing increasing amounts of pain to the target from ranges of up to 0.6 miles away. If his claim is true, it would be the first known use of microwave weapons on a battlefield.

At the moment India denies this claim and calls it fake news.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine investigated and just produced a 64-page report. Microwave radiation is the "most plausible" cause of migraines, dizziness, memory loss and other ailments that dozens of U.S. diplomats have complained of while serving in Cuba and China, a new report says. "The committee [consisted of 19 experts in neurology, radiology, electrical engineering and other relevant fields] felt that many of the distinctive and acute signs, symptoms, and observations reported by the Department of State employees are consistent with the effects of directed, pulsed, radiofrequency energy."

The report noted that individual cases varied but that many diplomats described a common pattern:

"The sudden onset of a perceived loud sound, a sensation of intense pressure or vibration in the head, and pain in the ear or more diffusely in the head. Most individuals reported that the sound or these other sensations seemed to originate from a particular direction and were perceived only when the individual was in a specific physical location. Some also reported sudden onset of tinnitus, hearing loss, dizziness, unsteady gait, and visual disturbances."

2 top Trump officials say they were hit by the mysterious Havana Syndrome in DC

Quote:
Two senior officials who served in former President Donald Trump's White House told CBS News' "60 Minutes" that they were stricken by symptoms of the mysterious "Havana Syndrome" in Washington, DC.

Since 2016, more than 1,000 US staffers, officials, and their families around the world have reported symptoms of Havana Syndrome, which include abrupt nausea, vertigo, and headaches.

Cases have been reported from Havana, Cuba, to Hanoi, Vietnam, to Geneva, Switzerland. Only five of cases have been reported on US soil.

Speaking in an episode of "60 Minutes" that aired Sunday, two of those affected, both of whom worked for the Department of Homeland Security, detailed their experiences for the first time.

Olivia Troye, who served as counterterrorism advisor to Vice President Mike Pence, told "60 Minutes" she fell ill in the summer of 2019 on the steps in front of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House.

"It was like this piercing feeling on the side of my head, it was like, I remember it was on the right side of my head and I got like, vertigo. I was unsteady, I was, I felt nauseous, I was somewhat disoriented," she said.

The second official who went public on "60 Minutes" was Miles Taylor, a former DHS chief of staff who was later revealed to be the anonymous official who detailed a "resistance" in the Trump administration.

Taylor, who left DHS in June 2019, said his ordeal started in April 2018, after hearing strange clicking noises in his apartment near the White House.

"I went to the window, opened up my window, looked down at the street ... and I see a white van. And the van's brake lights turned on, and it pulled off and it sped away," he said.

Taylor said he then began to get symptoms consistent with the Havana Syndrome.

Taylor told "60 Minutes" he also knew of a senior US official serving at cabinet-level in the Trump White House who had a similar experience at their home. He did not name that official.

The New Yorker reported last year that a senior member of the White House National Security Council was stricken with Havana Syndrome symptoms in November 2020.

The other case reported on US soil came in 2019, when a White House official told GQ that she began to experience symptoms of "Havana Syndrome" while walking her dog in Arlington, Virginia, which is next to Washington, DC.

Earlier this month, US intelligence experts concluded in a report that "Havana Syndrome" could be the work of targeted electromagnetic pulses.

However, the US has not placed blame on any entity for the illness and the CIA currently believes that it is not an attack by a foreign country.

"We've also not yet been able to link a foreign state actor or an external device or mechanism to any of those cases," CIA director William Burns told "60 Minutes."

"But as I said, we're not done yet. We still have a lot of work to do."

Former US official shares recording of mysterious sound behind the unexplained illness

On Sunday, 60 Minutes revealed audio recorded by a former US official who had heard the noise at his home in Cuba’s Havana.

Thanx for reminding me. I was just gonna post this report that I saw on 60 minuts last night.
