Prof Avi Loeb doesn't deserve that hate he has received from the scientific community

Since when does science not allow curiosity and wonder? He is asking questions that are absolutely fundamental to our existence

"Why does the scientific community hate me for being unscientific by trying to prove my pre existing conclusion?"

Loeb himself is out to destroy "curiosity and wonder" and to instill this self serving dogma of his on the world by demanding that the "scientific community" roll over and present it's throat to him without debate. And (like Trump) he projects his own motives on to others by making these accusations-that-are-really-confessions onto the scientifc community of being "the Inquisition".

This Ted talk is likely the same dishonest con job he always pulls...comparing himself to Galileo...that weve all heard before from him.

So there is not likely any reason for any of us to watch it.

So...sell us on it.

IS this just same s**t he has already spouted? Or does he offer some ...new s**t? Entertaining s**t maybe.

When you can't make a compelling scientific argument for your position just pretend like you're being martyred instead of just being held to the same standards as everyone else.

It's not too dissimilar from the celebrities who make a living off of loudly proclaiming how they've been cancelled.

Watch the talk, he makes his case very articulately. He says billions of dollars have been spent on theories in physics which likewise have no basis in solid tangible evidence (yet). In contrast the search for extraterrestrial life is not given as much priority. the SETI project has yielded nothing since its inception in 1984. I would posit he is advocating broadening people's minds rather than (as you claim) pushing people into dogma.

And what's wrong with being inspired by Galileo? Elon Musk uses Nicola Tesla as his inspiration for his billion dollar ventures.

I think you'll find he let's his science do the talking. He has been funded to run the Galileo Project in Harvard which aims to search for extra-terrestrial life and includes a team of 100 scientists who as of 2021 hail from Caltech, Cambridge University, Harvard, Princeton, Stockholm University, the University of Tokyo, and other institutions.

the project is expected to receive up to 1 billion dollars in funding to build advanced equipment.

So, yes, he is held to the same standards and exceeds them.

Stop it with your mendacity please.

He declares himself to BE Galileo. Both that great, and that persecuted. He is definitely not the latter.

I think he is drawing parallels with Galileo as the latter was coerced to withdraw his theories from the catholic church. Loeb is saying he is being coerced in the same way by the threat of academic ostracism.

Two things:

1. Galileo was proven correct.
2. Elon Musk demonstrated his theories.

Avi Loeb is making a mockery of science by failing to adhere to the Scientific Method and Peer-Review Protocols.

Sure, I would take beginner-level (101/102) astronomy courses from him, but the moment he would start trying to "prove" his assumptions about UFOs and ETs without providing valid empirical evidence is the moment I would gather my things and leave the classroom.

And trying to "prove" his assumptions with yet another YouTube video is both naive and presumptuous.

Ok.

I actually watched as much of the vid as I could stand. Just demonstrates WHY he is hated. He just shows how he is a self promoting arrogant jerk who falsely accuses everyone else of "arrogance". I am still coughing from the smell of burning martyr pouring out of the screen. Lol!

The boat part was kinda interesting. But it just shows how unscientific he is. You do science by attacking your own theory and trying to disprove it...prove it by failing to disprove it. He relies on other scientists to do that part for him. Find natural causes for his supposed evidence of "his" theory...which he also plagarized from Arthur C. Clarke's novel "Rondezvous with Rama" to get "his" theory of a big alien object entering the Solar System.

His interest in evidence for extra-terrestrial life began with Oumuamua
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CA%BBOumuamua

Currently theories explaining this phenomena have failed to adequately address what it was. Based on the speed it was traveling, it's origin from outside of the solar system, its strange shape and it's unexpected movements back out of the solar system Loeb postulated it might be a relic of an civilisation from another solar system. this is within the scope of the scientific method as in all probability it's more likely intelligent life exists > than it doesn't and therefore it was only a matter of time before a piece of a civilisation might come floating into our own solar system. It's a plausible hypothesis.

He is testing the veracity of his theories by searching for evidence. How is this less scientific than these projects?
https://www.nccr-swissmap.ch/research/p ... ing-theory
https://www.eduhk.hk/en/major-projects/ ... hypothesis
https://www.space.com/bread-experiment- ... ter-search

they are all based on a hypothesis

His so-called "research" into String theory, Multiverses, and Dark Matter -- none of which has been proven -- is irrelevant to his claims.

This whole topic is based on a PRATT -- a Point Refuted A Thousand Times -- UFOs as visitations by space aliens has been refuted so many times that it is not worth bothering with. People belonging to pseudo-science cults are often told to avoid reading material and visiting websites that can "disturb their faith". Therefore, naïve cultists may repeat bad arguments because they genuinely do not know the refutations. More cynical pseudo-sci claimants may bring out arguments that have been refuted time after time because they know the sheep who flock to hear their messages will not find out the refutations.

Posting multiple threads on the same topic by the same person should be frowned upon, if not expressly forbidden.  They should be treated like those "I Can't Get a Girlfriend" threads that plagued this website so many years ago (e.g., locked, hidden, and forbidden).

Not true, there was an attempt by his colleagues to have him removed from his post. Harvard launched an inquiry into Loeb and found not only has he not bought Harvard into disrepute but that he (Loeb) has the academic freedom to explore scientific mysteries. Actually this is only the second time this happened at Harvard. the other famous academic who was subject to a with hunt was the late Prof John Mack who investigated alien abduction.
https://www.thecrimson.com/article/1995 ... k-inquiry/
that too ended up with Harvard apologising to Mack for attempting to stifle legitimate scientific inquiry and quashing the ill-formed witch hunt.

If your claim his views are part of a cult or psuedoscience were true Harvard would have terminated him long ago (and you know it). His reasoning is sound, he has a theory and he is attempting to find evidence. He therefore can't be labelled as you have tried.
