non technical explanation as am understand it.
KDE=very rounded, graphically enhanced and the most modern windows gui like when compared against GNOME.
GNOME=sharper edged, more about performance than looks.

am have both GNOME and KDE guis on different linux distros, and have metacity running within GNOME,which allows more modern looks and is easy to use, have got a nice osx skin on it,but with GNOMEs minimal structure.

Install them both and try them out. There are some KDE based tools that are useful in GNOME and some GNOME based tools that are useful in KDE, so you'll more or less need them both.

Personally I liked the look and feel of Gnome better, when I tried them a few years back. I'll install a new FreeBSD box soon and see how they compare these days.

I've tried both KDE and Gnome. I think both of them are ok, but i prefer Gnome. Alot more simple, with KDE you can spend hours configuring every single aspect of it. Gnome is much more basic.

I've not used either in quite a while, though I liked Gnome because it was cleaner and more unobtrusive, much like the GUI for Mac computers, KDE OTOH, looks good, but the configurability was a bit more distracting, and there were other aspects that I didn't like about it.

I hate the fact that Gnome added the 'My Computer' directory in v 2.4 or 2.6, and I found it redundant. It would be good if Gnome had a modular install. That way you could further streamline GUI and make it very lightweight and fast, or bloated and resource heavy like KDE. --And make that F***ing 'My Computer' directory a module, please!! !!

Based on my experiences running both KDE and GNOME (both on Ubuntu 7.04, same machine), KDE is more stable.

KDE-> More stuff at your fingertips/More like Windows
Gnome-> Simplified, easier for novice use, less cluttery/More like Apple Mac OSX

One isn't better than the other, it just depends on your preference. I personally like gnome and reccomend that, but that's a personal preference.
