Can anyone help me with this? I'm trying to setup my sister's laptop so it can access the shared files on my main PC. I've set up the modem/router so that the internet connection can be shared by both computers, but I don't know how to share files between the two computers. On my main PC I've put some files into the shared documents folders, but it isn't accessible by the laptop. I'm assuming there's something else I've missed.

Be sure to enable "file and printer sharing" on both computers. (Right-click on the drive, select "Sharing and security", read the dialogue box).

Also, make sure to allow access through your software firewall (you do have one, right?), and also the firewall that's probably built into your router as well. Probably have to read the specific instructions for that.

Once you're able to network with her computer, visit "Shields Up" ( https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 ) with both computers to make sure you haven't opened up your file access to the entire world. It'll check to see if your important ports are closed to public access.

Thanks for the help. I've set up networking and can share files between our computers.

I went to that site and received this information:

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

In addition, the site reports that all my ports are invisible to it save for one, which is closed.
