Before my computer's hard drive had to be cleaned out I used Norton Internet Security. It was okay, it did the job but there some quirks. Now I have Mcafee Internet Suite. A few people who fixed my computer recommended this to me rather than Norton Internet Security. So far Mcafee is okay for me. I'll stick with it for a while and see what happens.

I don't personally use an Anti-Virus application, except for on-demand scanning. I prefer to just run Windows as a limited user (when I have to use Windows at all, I am primarily a Linux user), and then just grant administrative permissions to applications as I use them. If something I don't expect to need administrator permissons requires it, I simply don't allow it. Combine that with the necessary bi-yearly format Windows needs and you should be good to go.

That said, if you must use an Anti-Virus, I have used both the free versions of AVG and Avast and still install them on computers I repair for others, and they work just about as good as any other AV.

I threw out Symantec after they had so many support issues.

I've had a couple of minor support issues with McAfee but on the whole they're fine.

I personally wouldn't use the freeware product but it depends how security conscious you are (and how big your pockets are).

Since I do the licensing for work, I always make sure I get enough licences to cover home users as well.
