I also think I remember that we had the Netscape Internet Service when we first got a computer when I was very little.

Netscape Navigator... man, that takes me back...

Way back when, in the time of dial-up, we had Netscape on our computer- a Macintosh Performa 6320CD, running System 7.5.5. I can't have been more than six years old when we got it, back in 1996 or 1997. That was the first computer I ever really used. Ah, the memories...

Makes me want to dig it out of the basement and make it run again (it died of old age)...

IIRC, though, Firefox is a descendant of Netscape.

I used to use Navigator back in the 90s and well into the early 2000s.
I use Firefox now.

I used to use Netscape back in 1997. However as far back as 2000 when they went open source (as the Mozilla project), Netscape was just Mozilla with bundled AOL crap. And since about 2004 when Firefox first launched, Mozilla has been gaining recognition as it's own brand, while the Netscape brand has been dying. It only makes sense to drop the Netscape brand now, most people don't even recognize it anymore compared to IE, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari.

I remember that IE supporters called Netscape "nutscrape" and netscapers call IE "internet exploder"

In that spirit, lets mock our current batch of browsers. As I use mozilla firefox,(by choice), I hear by dub mozilla to be "slowzilla"

Rest in peace, netscape! I used it under Win3.1 but always thought it was slow as hell.

I remember a joke from the time when IE was new:

User1: Did you hear about the bug in Netscape which gives people read-access to your harddisk?
User2: Yeah - and I'm sticking with Netscape!
User1: But why?
User2: If it was an IE bug, people would have read/write access...

I used it almost religiously from 1997, to 2002 when Mozilla became viably stable. I absolutely hated the Netscape 6.xx series of releases.

Back during the 4th Grade [2001-01 School Year] i used Netscape 5 on the schools IMac G3`s.
It Was a very stable browser. [I mainly looked at Road Maps.] Then in 6th Grade i started using Internet Explorer and it Sucked. Half of my Internet Time was closing pop-ups and getting malicious software trying to install on the computer. Now i use Firefox and will never turn my back again.

I used Netscape for a while back in the late 90s. Before then I had Mosaic. Later on, I used Internet Explorer 2.0 and used that up until IE6, when I switched to Firebird (which then became Firefox) a few years ago.

Any of the really old-timers out there remember when Netscape was sold in ≈$50 boxes? And a little later on when Microsoft fired their salvo by making IE (and 'Outlook', their email/newsreader equivalent) available free for the downloading?

Yup. I bought a copy of Netscape 3 Gold Edition for about $35.

Also, I hated the original versions of Netscape on Unix not only because the UI utilised statically linked /libmotif, and would also lock your desktop completely with the asynchronous transfer error message.

Netscape 5 didn't exist, They leapfrogged a release number when they came out with the dreadful Netscape 6. You're probably thinking of the 4.5 or 4.6 releases. They were good on all platforms except for Unix. Unfortunately, if you wanted to browse the internet graphically with Unix, you were pretty much stuck with Netscape, unless you were using Solaris, whereby you could use IE.

Ya I remember Nutscrape, I liked it more then explorer, but I started using Opera in 2000, then when Firefox came out I started using that, about the only time I use IE is for running ms update

I fondly remember Netscape 3 and 4 back in the early days of my web browsing. Those two are probably my favorite browsers of all time, but they are obsolete now and won't work with most websites.

Netscape 6 and up sucked terribly, and I never got into them. It also didn't really matter, because by then Mozilla and then Firefox had come out and they superseded Netscape in pretty much all respects. Nowadays, for those who do insist upon a Netscape experience, I would recommend getting the Seamonkey web browser and installing a classic Netscape theme for it. That's about as close as you can get anymore.

I have used netscape myself, but not for many years

I use firefox now for my general web browsing, IE is only used when I have no alternative but to use it
