If anyone is interested in preparing for the CompTIA A+/N+ certification I found an excellent source.
I found videos by Professer Messer that are completely free. They are excellent quality.
Professor Messer
The only thing that is missing is some self-test quizzes. I have seen some sites that offer some certificate specific questions but often don't offer explanations (braindump?). I'm also leery because I don't want to get wrong information. But, I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for practice tests.

I wish I could get my hands on some cheap discount vouchers. I have seen some cheaper vouchers online but the discount isn't that great (maybe 15-20 dollars off). My dad works at a tech company. I wonder if I could use a corp number to get a discount (AKA "loop hole").

From my understanding they are considered good "foundation" certs. I don't have either one so I thought maybe I would take both exams.

One more thing to throw on my resume to distract from my spotty work history. LOL

I think some of the books need to be converted to English... I can only find American stuff.

I found a question that ONLY applies in the US. Household voltage at 110/120v (correct me if wrong) and in the UK 230/250volts.

And in two books by Mike Meyers, they refer to the RAM modules as "memory stick" If I stuck a memory stick in my computer board, I would have a hard time trying to fit one ....

I am studying for the A+ then I will probably go for N+ next, maybe one for Linux after that, or servers...

Keith,

You're so knowledgeable with computers that you probably can pass the A+ in your sleep.
When do you think you will take it?

Thanks, Jaydog1212 :)

I did some research - (using nothing other than my own mind) and found that I was right when I did the checks online. There is a new exam I believe will be ready applicable for next year, at least that is what I will aiming for. I'm thinking of March for being ideal.

There's actually more than one A+; I think one's hardware, one's for remote support, and there's a third one (I fess up - I got my A+ in 1995...;)

Current valid ones are 601: core, 602 Support Technician, 603 and 604

The A+ exam will change to the newer one on the 10th February 2010 in the US, Africa, and some other places.

Australia, New Zealand, UK and a select few others will have until 31st August 2010 when the old one will no longer be valid but still accepted by many companies.

Either way - take any exam you want.

I put off this part of my research for almost a month until I finally decided to go and have a look.

This is for A+ only. Network+ (N+) will be different

It's got me in the door at more than one place (A+), but it doesn't draw like it used to. It's more of an 'we expect at least that' sort of cert, nowadays. Can't hurt...
