Anyone develop in Adobe Flex?

Met a web designer recently and she said this is the future.

Looking at some examples, I would probably agree. We have gone on for years to define 'Web Standards'. Well a .swf website needs to conform to some kinda standards right? And as long as the browser runs Flash Player, everything is gonna be pretty much standardised.

It looks like really exciting stuff, except I have zero experience with Flash/Flex/Actionscript.

Anyone here use it?

Flash is good for some things but all flash websites are a bad idea. and basiclly unsearchable by a search engine.

People arent as concerned with flashy graphics over a useful site that has good content. and people that have a website developed for them are likely looking for a good CMS that allows them to update the page without having to have many technical skills required to add new content.


I mainly use Perl and PHP for web development.

Hey, yeah good point about searchable content. I think they are currently trying to find a solution for it.

I used to go around saying flash is not really usable for a site. But I think it depends on the market you develop for. I mean a majority of people in the field of music, photography, graphic design etc DO want Flash based sites.

I suppose if you are going to be developing for eCommerce then yeah best to steer clear.

I would also quite like to learn PHP. Most probably before I even touch Flash. What would you say I should work on for my first project in PHP? (e.g. random image gallery, forms etc).

When I learn something, I need some kinda goal rather than just following tutorials from a text book.
