I seek the combined input of the collective. An individual sometimes yearns for the hive mind, but never for assimilation.

None. They all give you adware and trojans.

I've had best luck with Bearshare Lite 5.0.2.5

Don't bother with any version after that, as all are full of adware and spyware. But in my experience this version of Bearshare will find files that other programs like Limewire and WinMx will miss.

Be forewarned, this version will prompt you incessantly to upgrade to a newer version. Don't do it.

no they dont, the better ones do not contain any of it in their software, and the software cannot be blamed for any crapware that is got through downloading files because that is through the users choice and not the softwares choice.

Soulseek [used this one for years, though dont anymore, make sure to go to the correct site and not the dodgy one that was set up to steal soulseeks users,if want to give it a try]
Limewire
Utorrent with a few of the major torrent sites [eg,the pirate bay,iso hunt..] bookmarked in browser.

am currently use both the limewire network and utorrent with TPB and IH, as they both have their good and bad sides so having them both installed gives better choice.

If you want just pirate music, there's nothing better than Soulseek. I'd recommend you to support the artists, though. 8)

There is good OpenSource torrent software, which does not do that. Azureus or ktorrent come to mind (or the classic console only bittorrent).

EDIT: @tomadao: There is a lot of legal music available on the internet as well!

I just found this out after reading your alarming comment. The simple act of being logged on the internet can give you adware, trojans, viruses, malware, keyloggers, and overall it compromises your privacy.

AAAAAHHH! ....EVERYONE LOG OUT!

Yay, someone finally agrees with me!

I'd only pirate IF:

-It wasn't available in the US with reasonable prices (It's 50 bucks to import a J-rock CD)
-If a family member owns it (a close one).

So, to the starter, just use Qtrax. It's supported by ads, but it's entirely legal and the artists get paid. All win except for the first part.

good torrent client like azureus, then just grab the discography via isohunt.com (sign up to specialist torrent sites for the rare stuff).
select only what you need using azureus, and prioritize the tracks you want to listen to immediately.

If your after really obscure stuff that you cant find via torrents youll probably end up installing ALL the smaller P2P programs anyway

Google Hack for single songs. It just searches google for mp3 and what not. Rapidshare and megaupload another good place
