It looks like YouTube is trying out a new video player...

I don't really like it that much. Here's why:

  • The old YouTube player is ubiquitous. You see it anywhere, and you automatically know that you're looking at a YouTube video. The new one just looks like a generic flash video player.
  • The new player is missing the little "view at actual resolution" button. I know there aren't a lot of people who like to watch videos smaller, but sometimes it's better to watch it smaller and better quality than bigger and blown up.
  • The volume control is unintuitive. You have to mouse-over the button to bring up the control, but not click on it--clicking on it mutes it. You also can't click somewhere on the slider to move it there...because that mutes it. You have to click and drag the slider.

And yes, that's the Rick Roll video. BTW, does anyone know why it shows as one second longer in the new player?

I mostly always choose to watch videos at their intended resolution, for the better quality. It's a pity to hear they've removed that feature, especially since Youtube videos are almost universally in a low resolution and bitrate <grumbles about Stage6 shutdown>
