I ask because I want to get a paid web host sometime in the future, but I do have a price limit. Usage would probably not be for business use - it would be for personal usage. I do not know what exactly I would use it for, but I want the host to support scripts and the like and come with a free domain name, though the latter is not required.

I used Geocities Pro before and am considering Bravenet's paid hosting. I tend to look for second opinions, however, and am seeking them.

I would use dreamhost. Thats who I use. I don't have my site up and running, but I do own my domain thru them. I like their pricing for hosting though.

I plan to host from home, which is a bit easier than most people realise. You just need a static IP address, which your internet providor can set you up with, and then Apache. Apache is a programme that allows all the html, script and other files to be online.

I'm running a number of websites on dreamhost and am very happy with them. Nice cheap service and the web tools they provide to manage your hosting are very good.

It really depends on several factors. Do you have your own web templates? Do you write or obtain all your cgi scripts on your own? If you do this and like to have extremely flexible options, I highly recommend http://www.1and1.com. I have been with them for several years with very few problems.

or not. I host from home, and use the free http://www.dyndns.com/ to map the dynamic IP address my provider supplies.

"only pay for what you use hosting"

Very good service, good uptime and very cheap. As you only pay what you use, there's no monthly fees. Thumbs UP :D
BTW, a domain is like $8 dollars a year

Alright. I'll look a little more into Dreamhost.

Thanks!

That's pretty neat. I did a small investigation with a dedi server package provided by SharkTech, and if you sold that bandwidth for 20c a gigabyte (NFS's lowest bandwidth rate) you'd rake in $1,800 on that alone. (They provice a 30mbit unmetered link for you, about 9TB a month (no overage charges :D), for as little as $159 pm for an Opteron 1400 8O and the service they provide is second to none)
