I am currently typing this from within the OpenSUSE 11.0 KDE livecd. (I'm plugged in with an ethernet cable :D so I don't have any wireless issues preventing me from using SUSE) I feel like I need a bigger monitor for this distro- everything is really big. Icons, mouse cursor, etc. Everything seems blown-up and cartoonish. Also, my touchpad setting are messed up, but I'm sure that could easily be fixed if I installed openSUSE. The reason I decided to try SUSE is because Ubuntu runs hot on my laptop, apparently because Hardy uses an older kernel than Suse 11. However, I'm not sure if I want to keep the Saturday morning kiddie cartoon for a user interface. I'm thinking I'll download the GNOME version and see if it seems more reasonable, though I'm sure I'll still need a full install before I can set up my touchpad the way I like it. The user interface (KDE) also strikes me as more Windows-ish, though I'm not extremely familiar with that OS to compare. On the plus side, it's green, and I like green.

Alternately, I could hold out until Ubuntu Intrepid is released in October with a newer kernel to solve my heating issues.

I think the large icons make it easier to view on mega screens such as 2048*1536 resolutions. Last thing you want to be doing is finding an icon that is the same size as a pixel. Gotta get my multi-boot set up done at some point - back up time I'm not looking forward too, over 500GB and about 100 or so DVD's Then get an extra 320 on JBOD or 160GB - not decided.....

Anyway - keep playing with the settings and good old Linux to auto configure you eth(0) port Windows needs drivers to even think about that stuff - even look on internet for them - good ol' catch 22

Well, suse 11 has issues with samba. You can have either client version or server, but not both. Not sure why.

Also, the clock won't set to the right time.

And... it HATES Nvidia. Certain setups of it, I'm sure, but still.

And KDE 4 has LOADS of issues, so if you can get everything else to work, at least use 3.5.

Or just get a slightly older version, cause that solves it.

Orwell, you can do a quick test of Ubuntu 8.10 to see if it clears up your heat issue. It never hurts to be able to do a proper comparison!
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha-4/

If you want to upgrade an existing install, type sudo update-manager -d into a terminal. the updater will pop up with an upgrade button in it.

But it is not advised to be used for a productive environment yet.

I wonder if there is a UI for linux that makes your computer have the Inerface of Windows Classic. Not all these bloated Beryl and KDE apps that make your computer look like a Fisher Price Toy.

Yes there is. Give me a second and I will find it for you.

That might help.

I am using openSuse 11.0, and quite enjoying it. I cannot comment on the KDE desktop, as I am using Gnome.

In fact, I am planning on setting up at least one server running on openSuse 11.0 coming up soon.

Yeah, that's the issue. I'm not really experienced enough in Linux that I want my computer to be the guinea pig of the next Ubuntu release.
