nintendo wi-fi help
Forget it, to play Nintendo Wi-Fi via your router you need to 1) reduce your security to a bare minimum and 2) reduce your router's speed to one your DS can handle.
I think Nintendo may have intentionally made Wi-Fi via router so crap to boost sales of their silly overpriced dongle.
OK sorry, I know the answer so if you really want to do some pain in the ass fiddling do the following:
1) Go to your router configuration and find an option to reduce the transmission rate. Some routers will accept only high transmission rates, and this will need to be changed to accept all. Mine has no such option, and if you find yours doesn't either, you're most likely not able to play Nintendo Wi-Fi with your DS, unless your router accepts all rates by default.
2) Put your security settings on WEP. Nintendo DS, having the backwards ass security compatibility is has, only allows WEP and not WPA, which is hackable by any Tom Dick or Harry who happens to drive by the front of your house, or your neighbours. Just change it back when you're done so you don't unintentionally share your connection with others. I don't know how Nintendo got away with this, it was released after compliance with WPA security was made compulsory.
Another thing I should add. Nintendo Wi-Fi on the DS is just plain incompatible with many routers. They have a list on their website. Yeah, talk about ass backward. They obviously skimped on the wireless card to reduce costs. Maybe their third DS model will include WORKING Wi-Fi.

You're supposed to be able to use a wi-fi Internet router just by being in its area of effect. Unfortunately, like Enigmatic said, doing so require settings that are generally insecure. You CAN by a Nintendo WiFi USB connector for about $40 ($20 or less if you get a used one from Gamestop or similar), which can plug into a PC with internet access. It generates its own wifi field specifically tailored to meet the DS wifi specifications. But, like Enigmatic said, it's a ripoff.

Happy New Year from WP's resident fortune-teller! May the cards be ever in your favor.
I didn't mention it before, but you want the router to accept transmission rates specifically of 1-2mbps.
The issues with Nintendo Wi-Fi are not game-specific and are system-wide, since all games have to connect via the DS's cheap wireless card.
If you do go out and buy the dongle keep in mind it only works on Windows XP. Not 2K, not Vista. Plus it also means you have to keep your computer running just to play your Nintendo online.
