I keep hearing it's the thing to have if you want to download music.

Is it something I can easily find and download for free?

What is it exactly?

How much space will it take up on my hard drive?

I have a two-year-old MacBook, running Tiger, and a lot of Garageband files that probably take up plenty of space (?) so can I even use this thing?

Obviously, I'm really technologically ignorant. I only started using iTunes a few months ago.

It is a peer to peer network client and is very useful for downloading large files on ADSL networked machines because it shares the upstream bandwidth among many sources it makes the best use of available bandwidth.
A stream requires a tracker to tell clients where to get there data from but the data is sent peer to peer therefore no server can be identified as the source so it is sometimes popular for sharing copyrighted data.
The program itself requires little disk space but you can fill your HD with downloaded files very quickly especially if you collect moves.

see:http://www.bittorrent.com/

there are many sites dedicated to file sharing this way.

Download and enjoy :)

I believe Transmission bittorrent client may be prepackaged with OSX. If not, download that one.

Thank you for the help.

I downloaded Bit Torrent and Transmission. But getting them to work was not easy (for me).

I found a site with lots of music files, but when I tried to download one, it opened up Limewire and downloaded it onto my computer. Then I got this error message:

Quote:
Torrent got exception: BTL.BTFailure
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "BTL/yielddefer.pyo", line 85, in _recall
File "BitTorrent/StorageWrapper.pyo", line 657, in _write
File "BTL/defer.pyo", line 57, in getResult
File "twisted/python/failure.pyo", line 258, in raiseException
BTFailure: Short read (259445 of 262144) - something truncated files?

I'm so confused. And this said to be something that's easy to use, so I must be a technological idiot. :wall:

I should join my local AS social club so that I can befriend one of the many aspies who might help me with simple things like this in exchange for something like . . . advice on how to dress or how to meet girls, or whatever.

I did release my inner geek, but it turned out to be an aspie with only a few "intense, narrow interests": reptiles, obscure music (and associated gear), and Australia. :nerdy: Now if only I could get her back in her cage where she belongs . . . :chin:

I definately RECOMMEND getting "utorrent", out of all the torrent managers, it uses up the least processor or ram (not sure exactly whats the name) meaning it is quick to start up, doesn't slow down other programs as much as others and has good features, also something about less virtual memory or something

get it HERE- http://www.utorrent.com/download.php

get the stable version, it might be a bit annoying to set it up, but once you get the hang of it, it's a peice of pi$$!

I've also heard good things about Transmission

you can get lots of legal stuff from these sites:
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/08/31 ... p3s-music/

and of course from the usual suspects:
thepiratebay
mininova dot org
