For me nope, sorry the blu-ray in my opinion is a piece of junk. Sony got greedy and wanted to conquer the gaming and movie market so they made a system for both just one problem, 30 dollars is to much for a movie most of which suck because Hollywood suck, the Blu-ray player is way to expensive then on top of that to even get the benefit out of the blu-ray you need an HD TV which is no cheap. I personally think Sony will lose a lot of money on this little gamble which is fine by me.

Just another device they invented to make more money. I'm happy with my DVDs.

Havent found any pressing need.

It is worth it only if you have all of the below:

40" or bigger 1080P HD TV with HDMI inputs
5.1 or greater surround sound system with HDMI inputs
The desire to view movies in their most purest of form.

It needs a HD TV? Isn't that going to kill it? Or are they hoping everyone should have one?

You can't buy a new TV without it being HD. Prices are becoming pretty reasonable. I saw an ad for 32" ones for under $500.

I don't own an HDTV and and I don't plan on it. I'm fine with my regular TV and DVD player.

Besides, we're in a recession, i'm not going to buy movies for a second (or in some cases third) time unless there's a significant difference in quality (like how DVD was infinitely superior to VHS from the beginning) and there isn't this with BluRay.


I'll keep onto my DVD player until BluRay is the only choice, and I don't see that as an option in the near future. Too many people don't care about BluRay.

Blu-Ray and HDTvs are a scam for @$$holes like sony to make money.

Blu-ray is not worth it. Pure and simple. Most movies aren't even designed for general viewing at more than standard definition anyway... You might have some additional quality, but not worth it in the slightest...

Considering you can stream most television online in HD with limited commercial interruption, I'm not exactly one for Blu-Ray. Now for movies, it's a different story, but IMO DVDs will be fine until OLEDs start to catch up. That or create plasmas with finer pixels...

EDIT: LCDs are nice sharp, but the contrast ratio is usually horrid. I personally prefer my industrial CRT running 1600x1200@75+ until technology better catches up.

From what I've read, they've recalled every unsold piece, and offered exchange for sold discs. Is there a new controversy?

Well I dont know if blu ray is worht it but DVD looks horrid on my 1080p. DVD's and the players were really expensive during the change over from VCR my DVD cost A$650 seven years ago now you can pick up a better one for $50
