Sound card problem with MS-DOS

Recently I came upon a K6-2 Machine about 10 years old. I was mainly going to use the computer for MS-DOS-Based Gaming. I installed Windows 98SE on it and the sound works fine in it. However even after all those ridiculous set=blaster settings I still can't get MS-DOS sound.

I tried all the IRQ and port settings in the configuration program for my Avance ALS-120 Sound Card. I even just using MS-DOS 6.2 & then 7.10. However the sound I will get is very crappy and low quality and when installing WFW 3.11 and then the driver for that I can't a huge screech and no sound after that.

Can you just give me the correct Port and IRQ settings for that particular card. The one for MPU-401 and Sound Blaster 16.

Is sound blaster still around? If so, I'd check their web site. Some fan sites might be a help too.

I still play a lot of the oldies (Duke Nukem 3d, Heretic, Descent 1 and 2, etc), and even with Win 2k I don't get sound (que lastima...

There might (don't quote me) be someone who's even written a Sound Blaster emulator (or maybe that's wishful thinking...but ya never know until you lookl)

My last sound blaster card was sold with the PC (about 4 or 5 ago). You might be able to find a sound card on ebay, etc.

Its not a sound blaster. It is a Avance ALS120 Sound Card.

I just bought a Sound-Blaster PCI-128 off ebay. Will that help.

why not just use an emulator like dosbox?

Hmm. I do tend to get (somewhat glitchy) sound with most games in dosbox, so if that's a possibility you could try that out.

You know there's win-whatev source ports for at least the first two, right, as long as you've got some kind of crappy graphics accelerator?

DOSBox sucks, you're better of maxing out the memory on an old 450Mhz K6 or PIII. Slapping Win98SE and the box and getting a sound blaster card.

Win98SE boots in 15 seconds on this machine and has 99% of resources free. Compare 450Mhz to the crappy 486 emulated in DosBox that doesn't even get full frame rate.

Everything is slow on DosBox.

I have no idea how to setup your sound card to work on the older OSes, I remember being happy when we got out of that whole nonsense we had to do back in those days and promptly forgot how to do that stuff.

I've had a lot of success running programs in DOSBox on my computer with nil to minimal issues.

Those were the days... There is not defaultsetting for the Blaster variable... you need to check interrupt, IRQ, these things in Windows first. AFAIK. It's from the glorious age before plug and pray.

You might have to reseat the sound card. I had a computer I did that in because the sound did not work. Also you might have to install DOS sound drivers for that card because DOS does not support sound natively other than PC beeper.
