i think my pc has virus

I've been searching on websites for downloading with megaupload at a premium level, and i think i cought a virus sinds my pc makes alot of noise when doing nothing... need help here

isn't there a way to completely bring it back to the state it whas several hours ago?

It sounds like your fan is running fast. Right? If so, just turn your computer off for a few minutes to let it cool. Run some malware scanners while you're at it. Spybot S&D is good. I don't know (at least not from personal experience) of any good free anti-virus programs, but hopefully you already have one installed.

I use AVG but I'm not sure if its good or not.

Its aboput as good as a free one can get....I dont know if there is a pay version and if you have one or not. You could try Nortan and pay for it.

got it in my de-vistaed ubuntu-obliolockedout laptop

but haven't used it sufficiently for any fair judgment other than hearsay (from Seb) and here-read

according to Seb, we are not bothering with Avast on my new de-windowed ubuntu pc,
maybe until we install the beta7, but i would expect that to be unnecessary in a virtual box

Norton only caused lots of hassle in installing stuff in Vista when getting the laptop started,
almost first thing i got rid of when i got the pc

well don't think it'll matter anymore Spybot S&D downloaded and it detected a hell of alot of virusses, now i only wonder where they come from because i'm always on save sites. Oh well i guess you could never be 100% completely sure... Maybe they all came from one site doesn't matter (still scanning now just posting teh good news)

No way, Avira Anti-Virus is better, it's detection is much better than avg. Get Avira Antivirus http://www.free-av.com/

Norton is a bloated pig and doesn't do crap. On top of that, it's really expensive.

Spybot is good, but it will only take out spyware/adware. You still need antivirus.

As Orwell said, Spybot has nothing to do with Antivirus protection.

The top three AVs are AVG, Avast! and Avira. Pick one.

The non-free lot just charge you for picking up maybe a tiny few more viruses, if that. They certainly clutter your system up with so much rubbish, that you'd probably prefer to have the virus.

I think all three of the free ones above do offer a "pay for" version, which does exactly the same virus protection, with the same database. It just gives you some extra toys that you might find useful.



There's no point in getting worked up about viruses, except on Microsoft products.

And... if you run Windows on a virtual machine, you still need to have an AV, but a firewall is probably redundant. OTOH, if a virus gets to the virtual Windows, you just overwrite it with a backup copy of the virtual drive. Time... three minutes, say, to copy a few Gig file. Not the week of trying to reinstall from scratch.

Hell, pick 2 I've found that Avast and AVG compliment each other quite well.
