Has anyone heard of it?

nope...sorry. What have you heard?

OpenID is a thing that Yahoo had made to allow users to use there email as an account name. Some site that accept it is flickr, and another site but I forgot the name.

pakled: When I said "I have heard" it was just a form of expression. I've used it.
shugo974: Google has also made it. If you have an account already on AOL, a blog on blogspot , an account on flickr, Yahoo, and various other sites you will already have an OpenID, which is an url.

For example an OpenID on blogspot is this: http://nameofyourblog.blogspot.com/
All blogs on blogspot are OpenID's.

The practical purpose is to only give a username and password to one site, for example a site that you trust most. Let's say I trust google most and thus I only give username and password when I login to Google. Although when I want to login to other sites I only give the http://nameofyourblog.blogspot.com/ as login, and after that, it either redirects me to the login site at google or if I have trusted that site, then I can check the remember checkbox.

ok. I still use Hotmail, but there's so many other resources I can use, haven't really used AOL or Yahoo in a decade...

yea, i wish i would have had this stuff when the internet first came out, i probably have over 1000 different profiles it's so hard to keep up with

It depends also on the information you want to disclose to the internet.

If there's more profiles.. there's also more rubbish to filter through; useful if you want to keep some of your information private. - I think I've got a OpenID, but I don't see anything great about it. Its just 1 step up from anonymous, but still its not something I'd trust.
