I was just turning on my Laptop and after a few seconds it started making this loud beeping noise (which wouldn't stop) and nothing would load. So I had to turn it off (by pressing the button which turns it on), and when I started it again it worked.

Does anybody know why this would happen? I mean, is this a sign that the computer is breaking or that a virus is on it?

I'm sure the hardware experts will be along shortly. I think beeping means a hardware problem, such as some bit of equipment not found or not functioning properly. The number of beeps can be significant too. The beeping is from the BIOS not the operating system as such.

I've got a laptop that boots fine, I can enter the power on password but after Windows XP has loaded there is a 1 in 50 chance that Windows can't see the keyboard (its a laptop!! !). The only solution is to reboot. Hardware does some weird things sometimes that aren't consistent with each boot.

Exactly what did the beeping sound like?

Did you do anything between the two power ons?
