-Because it's very adaptable to own needs,and has many worthwhile addons.

Open Office
-Prefer OO far more than paid versions and its cross platform.

One of the free anti viruses.
-couldn't pick one,but have to have an AV on the list.

Foobar2000
-it's the best music app have ever used,it isn't high on looks but that pushes up the performance,and can adapt it in many ways to suit individually,it'll run FLAC,mp3,wma whatever.

One am waiting for to be able to add to a list like this,is a free version of communicate-webwide:

it can translate text into makaton symbols or be used as a normal browser,which would make internet browsing much easier for self,problem being it has a licence charge per year and there's nothing like it for free.

Am probably have more programs that should be added but cant think of anything else at moment.

eboard (so I can play internet chess)
xBoard (easy to do analysis with powerful chess engines)
Googlizer (it sits in my panel... basically, I click it and it opens up a new FF tab with a Google search of any highlighted text in the X selection, really very handy)
LyX (LaTeX editor)
Back in Time (automated scheduled backups, heck yes)
Songbird (because Rhythmbox wouldn't sync to my iPod)
Pidgin IM (I can alias usernames and have multiple accounts handled simultaneously)

It has alot of portable applications that you dont have to install on the host computer, just onto your USB drive

Based on all the programs listed, I'm guessing the meaning was free as in beer, right? Not necessarily open-source.

In that case, I'm adding Opera. It's a great Internet suite.

ReactOS(May not count, as its an OS and not an app)
-Open source Windows compatible OS. Incomplete and very buggy but shows tremendous promise

-Fast, secure, open source, cross platform web browser.

SharpDevelop
-Open source Visual Studio clone. Works excellent and has a very small footprint.

Gimp
-Free photoshop clone. Again, works well with little space taken. Does everything I need it to

-Free MS Office clone. Works better than MS Office because it doesnt use a ribbon interface.

VLC
-Excelent media player, and allows flash video on older, less capable hardware.

AVG Antivirus
-Free, fast antivirus that works.

-Free text-based web browser. Takes a bit to make it work right, but its worth the speed benefit.

Blender
-Easy to learn, powerfull 3D modeling program

Speedfan
-CPU tempature monitor. My laptop overheats a lot, so I have this running in the background.

eww... I didn't think people still used Kazaa anymore. Have you give consideration to other filesharing programs? Ares is pretty good. Or if music is your thing, Soulseek is absolutely amazing... never seen so much music in one place... not on kazaa, not on limewire, not anywhere...

Anyways, here's my list
K-Meleon - Really fast web browser(I'm on a pentium 3 so speed and small memory footpring are important to me).
Foxit - A pdf viewer with speeds at least thousands of times faster then adobe's... and it has a pdf editor which is nice
utorrent - Lightweight, yet fully functional torrent program.
The KMplayer - Best media player I've ever used. I honestly never liked VLC other then that it can play nearly any format, which The KMplayer can also do.
gvim - Excellent text editor. Works amazingly for coding.
nethack - Open source game... can't live without it.
putty - I mainly use it as a better version of telnet(the telnet client that comes with windows is atrocious imo), but it can also ssh, ftp, etc..
Can't really think of others... I mean, theres plenty of free programs I use, but these are the only notable ones imo.

- Tofu: Text reader.

Just google any of those to download. Some are also available for Windows and Linux OSes.
