Upgrading Windows

With a Sp1 installation that is not genuine is it possible to do a windows repair using an Sp3 version. Will this automatically upgrade the OS to Sp3 without destroying the files in windows. eg My documents etc

A basic repair does erase a lot of files such as the registry... now... you should be able to do what you're talking about, but you need the second repair option, if it shows. Seems to be a bit of a shot in the dark, but if it's there, then it will be later in the install, right when you select your HD. You might see repair at the bottom of that screen. Like I said, not always, but that one does no damage to any programmes or files. Only fixes corrupt windows or out of date windows.

And yes, SP1 can upgrade directly to SP3, no need to hit 2.

I use Ubuntu 98% and am eagerly awaiting Jallopy. I only really run XP to play games, I really cannot be arsed getting Steam to work on Linux and then trying to run XP games on Wine.

BTW how much slower would running XP from within Ubuntu make my comp?

My version is SP1 and I was wondering considering that it will not pass WGA if the sensible way to get it to SP3 was to try a repair using an updated version or does anyone no of a non WGA site that I can get SP3 from?

Try the RC, it's stable. (Well, my browser just crashed about 5 seconds ago, but I'm pretty sure that's a problem with the Opera alpha and not the Ubuntu RC). You could try a program called Wine-Doors, it makes install via Wine simpler. It can be obtained through the excellent Ubuntu Tweak program available from getdeb.net.

I personally see no performance hit running XP within Virtualbox in Ubuntu. However, I have 4GB of RAM. Gaming inside a virtualbox is likely to be an inferior experience.

I'm not sure, but I think it would be best to obtain a legit license key.

I despise you and your fat ram.

VB won't even install XP on mine, lappy just flips me off and overheats.

I'm considering a water-cooled setup through a few holes in the bottom, not like the bloody thing leaves the desk, too heavy.

OP: If you're trying to upgrade to skip out on WGA, don't bother. Once it's on your system, it KNOWS. Repair install won't fix it, you'll have to start from scratch. And, IIRC, SP3 has WGA already in it, so when you use that, you'll get the same 30 days. You're better off finding a dead POS and taking the key off of it, MS just wants one install of the OS per key. Dead computer = no OS.

Not true, the WGA program is easily removed. I just want to upgrade SP1 to SP3. I really dont want to give Bill a few hundred bucks just so I can play games occasionally.

The dumb thing is I do have a genuine XP pro licence but it is for my old dead lappy, there must be a config problem because MS tells me that it is not a Valid Licence
