Sure, I could have read one of the older postings, but I'm half lazy, half wanting to show off my new toy:

Sony LV250J/B

So what anti-virus, anti-adware, and so on programs would you recomend?

If you are running 32-bit Windows, I recommend Panda Cloud Antivirus. And you absolutely need Spybot S&D. Aside from that, you should of course be running Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript. There are a few other security add-ons for the truly paranoid, but they aren't necessary.

OOPS: I see your machine comes with 64-bit Windows. Better than 32-bit, but Panda won't run. Try Avast or AVG.

Oh yeah, the first thing I installed on it was Firefox, within a minute of finishing registration. That'll probably be the first and last time that IE's used on this computer. Thanks for the other recommendations, Orwell.

AVG is good, and every once in a while I scan my computer with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, for stuff that's hard to get rid of.

I recommend NOD32 and Malwarebytes.

AVG Free. Only problem with AVG is there's a mysterious performance hit after about 2 weeks of running it. It's still better than Symantec / Norton, McCrappy, or any of several other payware antivirus programs. Norton IS a virus.

My preference is for Avast, I have found AVG to be too clunky. The best defence is to not use Windows

I use Avast, Spybot S&D, Alurias Spyware Eliminator, Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster. I even use Avast to protect Ubuntu from getting rooted. Linux distros are particularly vulnerable to rootkits. Better safe than sorry. WardenWolf, I liked how you made fun of McAffee. I nearly fell out of my chair when I read your post.

Try Avira, it has better detection rates and less false-positive than AVG and Avast

Malwarebytes is only useful for getting rid of certain malware and adware crap. It's not really useful for malware. If you're that concerned about malware/spyware/adware/crapware/winshitware, get A-Squared.

I would recommend a license from Stopzilla. One warning though: it can break one or two applications in the process, but I know other applications which have done the same. It's really, really good at detecting and finding trojans.

For anti-virus: go for a 30 day license from Sophos and keep on using the free license by constantly registering at their homepage once a month. It's not enough, so combine it with anti-virus through active-x plugins too. You can combine E-SET and PANDA.

For constant anti-spyware protection: CounterSpy. It has never caused anything to brake in my system so far and don't slow down the system very much, either. It has a pretty fast scanner, I think it's good.
