I insert a CD, blank or program and it won't read or write to it. The computer will tell me, "Please insert a disk into drive E:"

There is a disk in there.

I try formatting the disk and it'll tell me the same thing.

I'll then try installing a program from a CD and it won't read the CD.

How old is the computer?

Could be worn bearings on the CD drive. Can be cheap to replace

I had the same problem with my PC a couple of days ago. I didn't know how to fix it so I Googled it and found this download on Microsoft's website called Microsoft Fix It. Here's the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Try that, it fixed mine.

Check the cables are connected properly if that does not fix the problem the greatest probability is the the CD/DVD drive has failed and should be easy to have replaced under guarantee.

Have you tried unplugging the drive and uninstall the driver before re-connecting the drive.

And what os r u using? If it's Windows, have you installed any disc buring software recently? (eg: iTunes, Nero, ...) Also any games? Most come with some sort of copy protection that may cause trouble.

I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit w/sp 1.

We recently got new cell phones and the wife's been installing a bunch of sh*t to get ringtones and pics. I'll see if one of those is the problem.

Just uninstall?

It's the strangest thing; I can hear the disk spin and the mouse pointer will adopt a disk motif but as if to kick me squarely in the junk, it won't read or write.

I blame the schools.

Unfortunately, uninstall more often than not still leaves the drivers there.

Follow the instructions on this page and check if there's any driver items in UpperFilters and LowerFilters. They are usually the culprit.

:? In that case, I suggest you check if the drive is still working first. Do you have any bootable CD or DVD? Can you boot from it?

I had a problem like this once, only I have 3 CD drives, and I was picking the wrong one...;)

See if it shows up in Control Panel, under system. If there's a drive letter, try something you should be able to read, and go through DOS. That bypasses most of the driver bs...
