Its a scifi convention that even thogh aliens speek there own languages, its acted and filmed in English/the language of whatever country the show/films from so that audiences can understand it, allthogh I personally think subtitles wood be a better idia. More realistic...

Star Wars has the same problem, only bigger than most scifi, cos NOBODY speeks English, cos theres no Earth for it to come from. The Humans in it speek a language basicly called "Basic". What i never understood about Star Wars thogh was that the Basics translated into English (even thogh we no for a fact that it dosent ACTAULLY sound like English) and yet sum of the alien languages have subs...

This isn't so bad. The question is how do the main characters (e.g. Atlantis team) speak to other races (e.g. Anothosians) without needing a translator?

Or perhaps they all just speak ancient, and it's the tv set that translates that into english? ;)

(The "all speak ancient" bit probably isn't too far off actually, since a) Dr Weir was able to speak to the actual ancients in Atlantis 10,000 years ago w/o any difficulties and b) the Wraith use a variant of Ancient in writing, so why not speaking and c) thanks to the active use of the Stargate by the natives people the language would change very very very slowly.)

Combine that with the special DHD at the Atlantis stargate, and maybe you have a special stargate that changes everyone's tongue to Ancient when they come thru ... but then it doesn't explain the Daedelus and their crew members. Hmm.

How do we know that it doesn't sound like English? I'm confused.

A few reesons. When Aurubesh script is translated into the Latin alphabet, it the words that come out are rarely anything like English. The names - have you ever met anyone called Obi-Wan, for example? :P Theres other reesons to but I cant think of them rite now.

Actually, I think Basics probably closer to Japanese than it is to English, I no for a fact that Dooku is Japanese for poison...

All the answers I've seen don't do a vey good job though, simply because it's been totally avoided in cannon. (The main characters aren't even suprised that they can communicate!! !) Sheesh.

Or why they're either Canadian or previously seen or either MacGyver or Star Trek.

Actually I believe the official anwser to your question is "They're (the fans, that is) not suppose to notice that." LOL. Of course, this is a show that doesn't take itself that seriously, which is why it's a fabulous show.

The cara was in the film, he was just played by a different actor.

Kurt Russel just didn't play a good Jack O' Neal.

Spoiler at http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/s2/2x1.shtml is suppose to discuss an episode with the Hot Zone aliens (the ones who supposedly made the nanovirus).

I'm also big Stargate fan. It's great to see that there are others, because most of the poeple i know don't the Scifi channel so I can't even talk to them about. However, did any of you know that the Scifi channel is not going to renew Stargate: SG-1 for a 10th season?!?!?!?!?! I'm really mad about this because you can't have Atlantis without SG-1. So, what is everyones take on this?

I dont have the Scifi Channel either, we have Stargate on Sky 1 and Channel 4 here :P (I watch it on Sky 1 cos it means I get it a year earlier than Channel 4 lol). And... its in the 10th season now 0.o dya mean 11th season? Yeh I heard about that. No reason it has to stop there though just cos a particular channel wont have it anymore.

sorry about that, I did mean the 11th season. (It really late when I was writting the post!! !) I have agree with you on that. However, from what I understand no other TV network wants it. Just a side question but what is Sky 1?

While I am disappointed about SG-1 not going on to an eleventh season, I can't say that I'm all that upset over it. Ten years is an excellent run for *any* television series. For a sci-fi series, ten years is nothing short of phenomenal. And truth to tell, while I am still enjoying the season 10 episodes I'm seeing now, the show just isn't the same without Richard Dean Anderson.

On the other hand, I love what they are doing with Atlantis, and look forward to several more years of it. I seen no reason why they can't do Atlantis without SG-1... they did Star Trek DS9 without Star Trek TNG, for instance, and DS9 was way better than TNG.
